The Byzantine Choral Inheritance by Cappella Romana

Made possible by generous support from The Saint John of Damascus Society and a grant from Cambridge Arts, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, and The Saint John of Damascus Society at First Church in Cambridge, Cambridge MA

Vocal Ensemble Cappella Romana presents THE BYZANTINE CHORAL INHERITANCE with rarely heard music from the historic traditions of Byzantium and new works inspired by them.

Music Director Dr. Alexander Lingas will lead the first half of the program. The concert will begin with works in Greek from medieval Constantinople, followed by liturgical works by twentieth-century Greek American composers such as Tikey Zes, Theodore Bogdanos, and Frank Desby.

The second half, led by Associate Music Director John Michael Boyer, will feature the East Coast premiere of Heaven and Earth: A Song of Creation, a setting of Psalm 103. Commissioned by the Saint John of Damascus Society to celebrate the discovery of the Higgs boson, six composers: Tikey Zes, +Richard Toensing, GRAMMY-nominee Kurt Sander, Alexander Khalil, John Michael Boyer, and Matthew Arndt, each set a portion of the Psalm, creating a seamless tapestry.

Trafficking 101

Trafficking 101 will take place via zoom on Saturday, March 5th from 10:00 to 12:00 pm. In our time together we will learn about trafficking here in the United States, unpack the difference between legalization and decriminalization of prostitution, and explore how the church can respond.  Most people are unaware that 70% of women who enter the sex trade are girls who have aged out of foster care. Most are unaware that the average age of entry in the United States is 12-years-old. And, most are unaware at what they can do about it. In this training you will learn all this and more. This training is lead by Rev. Bonnie Gatchell. founder and director of Route One Ministry. Route One has reached women sexually exploited for more than 12 years. Changed by Hope – Grace Chapel Women’s Christmas Gathering

Do you need hope this Christmas? If so, you’re not alone. We enter the story of Jesus’ birth to find a world that was dark, problems that were overwhelming, and people whose lives were desperate—yet beautiful, complex, and real. In their stories, we find ourselves. And we meet the God who offers hope.

At this year’s Grace Chapel Women’s Christmas Gathering on December 1st, women of all ages will come together to celebrate the season and encourage one another. Experience a creative, narration of the Christmas story and hear real stories of people then and now whose lives were forever Changed by Hope.  You can also interact with grassroots organizations bringing hope to their communities, browse a bookshop, and enjoy light refreshments. Women of all faith backgrounds are invited. Bring a friend—or meet one here.

Early bird cost is $20 til November 27 then goes to $25 on November 28. A portion of the proceeds benefit grassroots efforts.

For more information and to register, visit www.grace.org/changedbyhope.
