Missional Letter

In a world where siloes, polarization, and hostility are deepening, we believe there is no better time for the Church to step into its calling to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3). For fifteen years, UniteBoston has been setting a table of fellowship where Christians from all backgrounds can gather. Along the way, many of you have asked us honest and important questions: “Is this a place where I belong? Am I truly welcome to participate and lead in UniteBoston?”

These questions deserve thoughtful attention. In response, our staff and board have written a Missional Letter to the UniteBoston Community to clarify our calling as an organization, drawing from what we’ve learned over the years. Today, we want to offer clarity about the values that hold our community together and what you can expect as you journey with us.

In Summary:

  • Our Unique Calling: UniteBoston’s calling is to set a wide and hospitable table of fellowship that reaches across the rich diversity of the Church to foster collaborative Christian mission, reconciliation, and justice. The Body of Christ grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (Eph. 4:16).
  • A Deep Unity: Upholding Jesus’ prayer for our oneness is a journey of tending to the wounds that have fractured Christ’s body and courageously reckoning with the deeper causes of estrangement and division. When we commit to addressing the underlying causes through listening, repentance, and repair, healing can take place.
  • Imago Dei: We intentionally welcome everyone in the body of Christ to participate and lead in UniteBoston’s ministry and programs. A “seat at the table” is not a blanket affirmation of every theological position. Rather, it creates space for cross-cultural friendships, shared discernment, and mutual accountability as we all grow into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
  • Public Witness: In a season of profound polarization, our ability to gather across differences bears witness to Jesus’ prayer for oneness (Jn. 17:23), serving as a living sign of the Gospel and a powerful testimony to Christ’s reconciling work in the world.

We share this missional letter with humility, recognizing that the Holy Spirit continues to teach and transform us individually and corporately. Our prayer is that this clarity nurtures trust and strengthens the Body of Christ as we follow Jesus together.

We welcome you to join us at this table. Come as you are—There is a seat for you.

Together in hope,

The UniteBoston Staff and Board of Directors
