Worship Night Featured in the Boston Pilot

The UniteBoston worship night was featured in the Boston Pilot! The Boston Pilot is a Catholic newspaper and has a readership of over 60,000.

BOSTON — Catholics are invited to participate in an informal, ecumenical worship event, entitled “One City, One Love,” being held on Aug. 16, at the Parkman Bandstand on the Boston Common.

The ecumenical group UniteBoston is partnering with the Institute for Christian Unity to host the event that will run 7-9 p.m.

UniteBoston executive director and board member Kelly Fassett told The Pilot, “The purpose of this event is to help all people encounter the love of Christ through worship. We want to create a unique worship environment for Christians of all backgrounds to come together around what unites us: Jesus.”

Dr. Vito Nicastro, associate director of the Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and Board President of UniteBoston, called the event “a chance for Christians of all different churches and ecclesial communities to come together around the person of our Lord Jesus Christ and around the experience of shared worship, which gives us a much stronger sense of our unity.”

Nicastro told The Pilot, “I think it’s important that Catholics attend this event because it is an example of what the Second Vatican Council recommended, or commended, for Catholics as part of our commitment to ecumenism, to the Christian unity which not only was a large part of the reason for the Second Vatican Council, but is also the direct expressed will of Christ that he prayed for.”

But, Nicastro added that the reasons to attend go beyond that.

“Catholics ought to attend this event is because it’s fun. It’s new, it’s easy to do, and enjoyable, and informal, and a great way to just meet all sorts of different Christians who will be there and there’s as much to give as there is to receive,” he said.

The event was first held last year at the suggestion of a UniteBoston summer intern, Chloe Gaydos, now the UniteBoston Worship Team Coordinator. At the time, she was a student at Gordon College, where she regularly played drums at charismatic worship services. That year, hundreds of people gathered for the event on the Common, including passersby attracted by the music in the popular public spot.

In an email to The Pilot, Fassett said, “We want the church to be represented in her full diversity and splendor but also to help people who might not normally step into a church building experience the love of God through worship. In John 17, Jesus prays that we would be one, so that the world will know who he is; thus, we unite not simply for unity’s sake but because our unity is evangelistic, a sign and a witness of a God who has reconciled all people to God and one another.”

Fassett said they hope coming together from different Christian denominations will be an answer to that prayer, and “a visible sign of the reconciling peace that is found in Christ, which is something that I think our world needs right now.”

Nicastro said holding the worship event at the Parkman Bandstand “gives it a sort of public character different from many of our events.”

The UniteBoston Worship Team, who will provide music for the worship service, includes musicians and singers from various cultures and denominations.

Nicastro said, “It’s important for us to give our witness, it’s important for us to evangelize, and one of the ways that we do that is by publicly lifting up the name of Jesus together. But in this process we discover our real, though imperfect, incomplete, unity with all those who are incorporated into Jesus Christ by faith and baptism. And that’s a powerfully encouraging and upbuilding experience.”

A call to participate in the National Day of Prayer

This coming Thursday, May 1st, churches and individuals across our city will be joining together for the Annual National Day of Prayer gathering in downtown Boston. Sheila Donegan, the UniteBoston Journalist, had the opportunity to sit down with Latonya Brown to hear more of the history behind this year’s event.

——————–

We have a rich history of prayer as a nation. The National Day of Prayer was first signed into law by President Harry Truman on April 17th, 1952. He asked that the people of the United States would come together on this day and collectively turn our hearts to God in prayer and meditation. But the call to pray goes back much further than this. In fact, days of prayer have been called for in the United States since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer as the new nation was forming.

In his 1983 declaration, Ronald Reagan said, “From General Washington’s struggle at Valley Forge to the present, this nation has fervently sought and received divine guidance as it pursued the course of history. This occasion provides our nation with an opportunity to further recognize the source of our blessings, and to seek His help for the challenges we face today and in the future.”

As a country, we are celebrating the 63rd year of this event with over 40,000 gatherings across the United States. LaTonya Brown, this year’s coordinator for Massachusetts, told us that this year the focus is on mobilizing and equipping the Body of Christ to pray for sustained worldwide revival, reformation and restoration. LaTonya shared that in Massachusetts, we will be joining the millions across our country as we pray and seek the face of God on behalf of our city, state, and nation. There are currently fifteen prayer gatherings scheduled across the Commonwealth.

There will be two strategic events in the city of Boston:

National Day of Prayer Noonday Prayer Gathering at the State House

Gardner Auditorium, 12pm – 1pm

“That They May Be One” Clergy and Intercessors United in Prayer for Massachusetts

7pm – 8pm

Location: Congregation Lion of Judah, 20 Reed Street, Boston

(Worship lead by Zenzo Matoga)

“There is a move of the Holy Spirit happening across the earth and it is being strongly felt within Massachusettes and New England. We are here to call the body of Christ in our communities to come together and stand in the gap on behalf of our city, our region and our nation.” LaTonya shared. “We hope that all that are a part of the Body of Christ in the Boston and Greater Boston area will join us in this most significant time as we come together as one and lift up the Name that is above all names…the Name of Jesus over our city. May we see His Kingdom come here and his will be done on this earth as we do!

Boston’s Christian Community Comes Together to Commemorate Christian Martyrs

Last Saturday, more than 500 people of various cultures and denominations gathered to remember and honor those who have gone before us and died for their faith in Jesus Christ.

Dr. Vito Nicastro, associate director of the archdiocese’s Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs noted that it was the largest gathering of its kind in his 23 years with the office.

It was incredible to see how this event brought together the body of Christ in the city. I identify with what the Coptic Orthodox priests wrote, that “It is the blood of the martyrs that we honor; because of their blood shed, we glorify God. It is because of their blood that was shed, that we gather together in prayer. It is because of their blood that was shed, that we are able to build relationships between the different churches. It is because of their blood shed, that Christians are encouraged and strengthened in their faith.”
