Bridging Divides Across Christians for the Flourishing of the City

Ecumenical Spring Celebration – March 16, Saturday

At the request of local pastoral leaders and in faithful response to Jesus’ prayer “that all of them may be one” (John 17:21), Kinship Farm occasionally supports events where Christians throughout the North Shore and beyond can come together to share in the beauty of nature and fellowship.

Join us on Saturday, March 16! The centerpiece will be an outdoor, hour-long ecumenical Christian worship service. For an hour beforehand and afterward, participants may peacefully and contemplatively walk along woodland trails, and occasionally stop to engage with displays offered by Christians from a variety of denominations. Displays may include scripture and other text, music, art, woodworking, and other creative, interactive, youth-friendly displays about spirituality that is informed by Christ Jesus and that promotes healthy relationships and/or celebrates the natural outdoor setting.

The worship service and displays will be suitable for youth, teens, and adults and general registration is free. The event will be held in South Hamilton, MA. Displays will be staffed from 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. and the worship ceremony will run from 2-3 p.m. We regret and apologize that the trails, tents, and worship service will not be equipped with facilities or features to ensure full accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges.

To host a booth, churches will need to fill out an application form by February 26 and pay a modest commitment fee of $30. In return, on the day of the event, a basic tent and table will be set up for them and they will need to bring whatever additional materials they need to respectfully present their message. If you know of a church who might like to participate in the planning of the worship service or to host a booth, please forward this information to them.

About our Demonstration Application and requirements:

Outdoor interactive tented booth spaces are limited and are on a first come basis. We are asking for a $30 commitment fee along with your completed ‘Display Application’ form to secure your space. The $30 commitment fee is a small contribution towards the broader expenses associated with furnishing you a tent and table.

We appreciate your cooperation with the application process and kindly ask you to submit your completed Display Application and $30 commitment fee by February 24, 2024 to reserve your tented booth space.

All-Night Vigil for St. Richard of Wessex

Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville, MA invites you to join us once again in a special festal offering: an All-Night Vigil (Vespers, Orthros, and Divine Liturgy served together) commemorating St. Richard of Wessex, one of the great saints of early medieval England.
While St. Richard is celebrated on the Greek Orthodox calendar ( https://www.goarch.org/chapel/search?month=2&day=7 ), last year’s services were the first time there had ever been a full liturgical office for him (save for a lone Latin antiphon).
Come and share this unique blessing with us – an All-Night Vigil commemorating a saint of the British Isles who died in Italy traveling to Jerusalem, celebrated today by a Greek Orthodox community in New England, with an office composed in English specifically for Greek Orthodox use, that will be sung according to the tradition and practice of Byzantine chant.

A BRIEF LIFE:
St. Richard of Wessex (+722 A.D.) was a king in Anglia who, with his wife St. Wuna, raised his children Ss. Willibald, Winnibald, and Walpurga in the Christian faith, but remained focused on his own worldly concerns and privileges as king.
Eventually, St. Richard’s children lovingly reproached him. They implored him to set a Christian example for them, just as Noah had first entered the Ark ahead of his children, and to heed the words of our Lord to give away all that he had and follow Christ.
St. Richard heard his children’s rebuke and repented. With tears in his eyes, he cast off his crown and distributed his wealth. His sons convinced him to go with them on pilgrimage to visit holy sites in Rome and Jerusalem, and they set out on the journey.
In Lucca, Italy, St. Richard fell ill and reposed in the Lord. Ss. Willibald and Winnibald buried him at the church of Saint Frigdian (San Frediano).
Miracles and healings began to occur at St. Richard’s tomb, leading to his veneration and glorification as a saint. His son, St. Willibald, became bishop of Eichstätt in modern-day Bavaria, and had relics of his father translated to his cathedral there as well.

Spirituality & Social Justice: Abraham Joshua Heschel & Martin Luther King, Jr.

Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King met in the early 1960’s and established a friendship based on shared values and mutual respect between their Jewish and Christian traditions. Through our study, we will pursue several key biographical, theological, and political questions:

  • How did each emerge as a public figure?
  • What were their understandings of the relationship between religion and American democracy?
  • How did they weave together ritual and ethics concerns?
  • Can we apply lessons from their interreligious, cross-cultural, and interracial efforts to oppose bigotry and hatred today?

By studying Heschel and King together, we will have the opportunity to learn by way of comparison and contrast—including the impact each had on the other—thus offering us two intriguing models of “spirituality and social justice.”

In their latest newsletter, Sage Paik offers a reflection on the practice of a spiritual examen, which is a great practice to begin your year. The examen has roots in Ignatian Spirituality, and involves taking time to “deliberately notice God and discern his leading in the internal thoughts and external events of our everyday life. This practice instructs us to become aware of God’s presence, review the day with gratitude, pay attention to our emotions, choose one feature of the day and pray from it while we look toward tomorrow.”
