2025 UN International Day of Peace

2025 UN International Day of Peace Boston: Act Now for a Peaceful World

Sunday, September 21, 2025, 2-4pm ET

Eliot Church of Newton UCC

474 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02458

“In a time of turbulence, tumult, and uncertainty, it is critical for everyone to take concrete action to mobilize for peace.” We have planned and organized the Boston area celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace each year since 2010. This year’s theme is “Act Now for a Peaceful World.” We invite you to a program of Music, Arts, & Peace Education led by emcee Dawn Duncan (Massachusetts Center for Native American Awareness), including brief presentations by peacemakers such as Ron Bell (Dunk the Vote), Zakiya Alake (Fair Housing and Equity), and Alda Witherspoon (Witherspoon Institute) regarding their work, with artistic performances by Cellist Miranda Henne, Singer Lina Marcela Sarmiento Tellez, and Spoken Word Poet Zenaida Peterson. It will conclude with a reading of the list of recent local victims of violence.

Co-sponsored with CMM, MCNAA, and Friends Meeting at Cambridge

Sankt-Martins-Umzug

This Saturday, November 9th, at 4:00 p.m. in Danehy Park, Cambridge, we will have a lantern parade to celebrate St. Martin’s Day! Bring lanterns or candles, and come see what this German tradition is all about. We will sing German songs, experience the story of St. Martin, and enjoy the colorful lights on our short walk through Danehy Park; we should be done by 6:00/6:30 p.m. (just in time for dinner). The weather is supposed to be cool but nice, so come join us! Some snacks traditional to St. Martin’s Day will be available for purchase but the event itself is free; it is also geared toward children, so bring your families!
Feel free to email us with questions: info@faithcambridge.org, and see you there!

Letter from Birmingham Jail: Public Reading & Reflection

All are welcome on the anniversary of Dr. King’s death for a public reading of Letter from Birmingham Jail, with times of personal and community reflection.

The Letter began in the margins of smuggled newspapers in response to criticism from moderate white clergy, and became the moral framework for the Civil Rights Movement. Today, it continues to call people of all faiths and none to pursue reconciliation in our communities.

With special guest Rev. Emmett G. Price III, Ph.D. Dean of the Chapel & Founding Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of the Black Christian Experience at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Global Unites Peace Movement

Called by God, Prashan De Visser of Sri Lanka is carrying out his vision to achieve peace building by means of the younger generation in war-torn countries.

Upon graduating from Gordon College in 2007, he formed Sri Lanka Unites. Since then, after graduating from the Kroc Center for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame University in 2015, he expanded the movement to become Global Unites, which now includes Kenya Unites, Uganda Unites, Congo Unites, Liberia Unites, Columbia Unida, Afghanistan Unites, Myramar Unites, and Palestine Unites.

He has been compared to Mandela, King, and Gandhi. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet him.
