She Is Not Alone: The Boston Pregnancy Center’s Call to Unite the Church for Life

For over 42 years, the Boston Pregnancy Center (BPC) has provided compassionate care, practical resources, and community to vulnerable women and families facing unexpected pregnancies. Coming alongside pregnant mothers, meeting material needs, and surrounding families in crisis are places where the entire Body of Christ can find deep common ground.

Laura Chaboya, BPC’s Director of Community Engagement & Development and a member of Hope Christian Church in Winchester, is our guest blogger this week. Read below to hear how churches across Greater Boston can unite in practical service to ensure that no woman in our city faces a challenging season alone.

Tucked away in a brick row building on Lincoln Street, just a short walk from South Station, is a small but mighty ministry where women and men have been finding hope, compassion, and support for more than 42 years. Some arrive afraid. Others feel overwhelmed or uncertain about what comes next. All deserve someone willing to listen and remind them that they do not have to face an unexpected pregnancy alone.

This is the Boston Pregnancy Center (BPC). For more than four decades, BPC has provided free, confidential services, including lab-quality pregnancy tests, professional counseling, parenting support, material assistance, ultrasound referrals, and after-abortion counseling.

She Is Not Alone

Pregnancy resource centers serve some of the most marginalized members of our communities: the young expectant mother just beginning her adult life, the newly arrived immigrant who speaks little or no English, the survivor of human trafficking, and those navigating pregnancy without the support of parents or family.

Many carry anxiety, financial uncertainty, strained relationships, or isolation. Through our licensed counselors, church connections, and mentors, we seek to provide more than immediate assistance. We offer a loving community that continues walking alongside them.

“You Are Not Alone” is the message of our new outreach campaign, appearing across Boston on the backs of buses and in digital advertisements throughout the MBTA system. It speaks directly to the woman facing an unexpected pregnancy: You are not alone. There is help. There is hope.

“She Is Not Alone” is also a message to the Church and our call to action. She is not alone because the body of Christ is called to come alongside her with prayer, practical support, mentorship, encouragement, and lasting community. Together, we can make those words a reality for women and families throughout Greater Boston.

When a woman faces an unexpected pregnancy, the question before the Church should not simply be, “How do we encourage her to choose life?” It should also be, “How will we walk alongside her if she does?” At BPC, our support does not end with a pregnancy decision or even the birth of a baby. We continue walking alongside women through counseling, parenting support, practical resources, and mentorship. We also help connect women who desire it with local churches, where they can find lasting community and relationships that extend far beyond their time at our center. Our hope is not only that she chooses life for her child, but that she discovers abundant life for herself in Jesus (John 10:10).

Scripture describes believers as one body with many members (1 Corinthians 12:12–27). Each has a different role, but we belong to one another. One church may host a baby shower. Another may provide diapers or financial assistance. A counselor can offer emotional support. A mentor can walk alongside a new mother. A congregation can welcome a family into genuine community that will offer friendship, childcare support, meals, and other ongoing acts of love.

No single ministry or church has to meet every need. Together, the body of Christ can walk with her.

Seeing the Image of God

At the heart of our ministry is the conviction that every person bears the image of God.

That includes the unborn child, the woman facing an unexpected pregnancy, the father uncertain about his role, and the woman seeking healing after a past abortion. Our calling is to meet each person with dignity, compassion, truth, and the love of Christ.

Research published by the Charlotte Lozier Institute reported that nearly 60% of surveyed women with a history of abortion said they would have preferred to give birth if they had received greater emotional support or financial security. This is a gap that the Church is called to step into. When the Church surrounds a woman with prayer, practical help, encouragement, and a loving community, we can help her see that choosing life does not mean giving up her own hopes, dreams, or future.

The Impact of Generations

Recently, we unexpectedly crossed paths with a woman who had been a BPC client many years ago. She thanked us profusely for simply existing and shared how the help and support she received had made a difference in her life.

Today, she is a grandmother with a beautiful granddaughter whom she loves and cares for.

What a powerful reminder that the impact of this ministry can extend far beyond a single pregnancy. The woman we support today may one day become a mother, grandmother, mentor, or source of hope for someone else.

Imagine the generations of lives that can be touched when we surround one woman with love!

What If Boston’s Churches Surrounded Her?

Imagine churches across neighborhoods, denominations, cultures, and traditions working together to support women and families. Not competing for recognition, but simply asking, “What can we contribute?”

This commitment has deep Christian roots. From its earliest centuries, the Church affirmed the value of vulnerable human life and cared for children whom society might otherwise abandon. Today, supporting women and families presents another opportunity for discipleship. When churches invite their congregations to pray, volunteer, mentor, and give, they demonstrate what it means to love their neighbors through sacrificial service while standing together for life.

The work happening inside our walls was never meant to belong to BPC alone. It belongs to the body of Christ. Our invitation to churches throughout Greater Boston is simple: come alongside her. There are many practical ways your church or ministry can support women and families:

  • Pray for our “She Is Not Alone” campaign and for the women and families who will encounter its message throughout Boston.
  • Invite BPC to your church to share a ministry update and equip your congregation to respond to unexpected pregnancies with biblical conviction and tangible compassion.
  • Host a baby shower or material-goods drive to provide diapers, clothing, baby supplies, and other practical necessities for families.
  • Volunteer or mentor by giving your time, professional skills, or encouragement to women and families who need a loving community around them.
  • Give financially so BPC can continue providing counseling, pregnancy support, material assistance, and other services free of charge.
  • Share BPC as a resource with your congregation so they know where to refer women and  families who may need support.

Contact us to discover even more ways you, your church, or your ministry can support and volunteer with the Boston Pregnancy Center.

And for churches outside of the Greater Boston area, we encourage you to find a pregnancy resource center in your own community and ask, “How can our church come alongside you?”

Let us be churches that do more than tell a woman she is not alone. Let us show her.

Because the love and support we offer one woman today can leave a legacy for generations to come.

She is seen. She is loved. And she is not alone.

This summer, Revs. Kelly & Devlin were able to visit the Boston Pregnancy center and see their ministry in action!
