The statement “Women should remain silent in the churches” in 1 Corinthians 14:34 is often used to justify excluding women from prominent church roles, including preaching. However, a closer look shows that, just a few chapters earlier, women are affirmed for speaking up and prophesying (1 Cor 11:5-6). What’s up with that?
