Sports as Sacred Activity

July 17, 2023 from 6:00 pm - August 2, 2023 from 7:15 pm

$60.00

Boston University’s School of Theology is offering a mini-course entitled “Sports as Sacred Activity” as part of their online lifelong learning offerings. In the busiest cities and in the smallest of towns across America, there are two entities you can always find— a church and some form of recreation; a basketball court, soccer field, or baseball diamond. Together, sports and religion can lead to important questions about embodiment, teamwork, competition, and play. Over the course of 3 weeks, this spirituality group will explore the cultural and spiritual significance of sports. More than conversation, this mini-course will engage our bodies for further meditation on how we experience the divine through physical activity. If you identify as a sports fan or athlete, coach or camp director, campus minister or sports chaplain, we invite you to “join the team” as we huddle at the intersection of sports and religion.

This course is facilitated by Cynthia N. Perry, M.Div. (STH ’23), a former college athletic trainer and fitness director. Meeting dates are on Mondays and Wednesdays for 6 sessions beginning on Monday, July 17th. Subsequent sessions are on July 19th (W), July 24th (M), July 26th (W), July 31st (M), and August 2nd (W). Sessions run from 6 – 7:15pm EDT.
