The mission of common cathedral (Ecclesia Ministries, Inc.) is to build community with and provide spiritual care to unhoused individuals in Boston, and to bridge the gap between housed and unhoused people. Having recently celebrated 25 years of living out this mission, the Board of common cathedral is seeking a dynamic leader to provide exceptional oversight of current programs, sustain the short- and long-term goals for the organization, and create additional opportunities for the organization to thrive.
common cathedral is part of a national and international network of outdoor congregations. Every Sunday for 25 years, no matter the weather or circumstance, the common cathedral congregation has worshipped on the Boston Common. Throughout the week, housed and unhoused people come together sharing God’s love through community, pastoral care, creative expression, and being present to one another. We welcome and support all people. common cathedral serves as an important community for people experiencing homelessness, and for faith communities who want to be in a supportive relationship with unhoused individuals and their friends.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director provides administrative and organizational support to the staff, team of pastors, artists, and volunteers who are part of the common cathedral community and congregation. In addition, they will be the external face of common cathedral, interacting effectively with its donor base of individuals, local churches and foundations; engaging in development activities, building new partners and allies, including extensive grant writing; and carrying the message of common cathedral to grow visibility for this ministry, which is wholly dependent on outside donations.
The Executive Director is responsible for developing, leading, monitoring, and modifying the overall organizational approach to service excellence for our congregation and community, staff and partners. This leader will assist in designing, developing, and overseeing the implementation of strategic initiatives for common cathedral in collaboration with the board of directors. This role will lead to the implementation of service excellence to support and achieve the strategic imperatives of the organization.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with board, staff, congregation, and community to ensure our mission is fulfilled through programs and strategic planning initiatives:
Responsible for implementation and management of common cathedral’s programs which support the organization’s mission.
Responsible for managing the strategic planning objectives as defined by the board of directors.
Responsible for the enhancement of common cathedral’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other congregations and partner organizations, including civic and private organizations.2) Organization Operations: Oversees utilization of resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.
Responsible for the hiring, supervision, and retention of competent, qualified staff. Establish performance excellence standards or methodologies to support team objectives, along with team building. Advance objectives in collaboration with the staff, volunteers, community members, and the board of directors, and in alignment with vision and mission.
Responsible for driving actively anti-racist work within common cathedral reinforcing an environment of purpose, empathy, respect and collaboration. S/he or they will build and foster an environment that is inclusive, supportive, and enables the team to provide the best possible work experience.
Responsible for effective administrative operations. Establish standard operating procedures, documented for all processes that are shared among the staff and volunteers.3) Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.
Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenue streams necessary to support common cathedral’s mission.
Responsible for the fiscal integrity of common cathedral, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum utilization of resources and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.4) Board Governance: Works with board to fulfill the organization’s mission.
Responsible for leading common cathedral in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.Professional Qualifications Needed:
Transparent and high integrity leadership
Five or more years senior nonprofit management experience
Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors
Passion for and demonstrated commitment to equity, social justice and anti-racist / anti-oppression practices
Experience working in an organization that seeks to be anti-racist
High level strategic thinking and planning
Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors
Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers and the overall community
Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results
Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community
Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers
Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong public speaking ability
A Bachelor’s and Master’s degree preferred

SALARY
Commensurate with experience.The Executive Director is a full-time position. Some evening and Sunday work is required. Benefit package provided.
