SUMMARY:Subversive Witness Book Group
DESCRIPTION:The Boston Faith & Justice Network invites you to our latest book group starting April 21 via Zoom (7-8:30). We will be reading and reflecting on Subversive Witness by Dominique Dubois Gilliard. \nGilliard challenges us to see our biblical mandate not as passive observers\, but as active participants in God’s justice. This group offers a sacred space to be challenged\, to grow in community\, and to discern how we can collectively steward our influence for the sake of the marginalized. Join us as we explore what it means to be a Christian witness today.”

SUMMARY:Sabbath as Resistance: Book group
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first book group of 2026!. We will be reading Sabbath as Resistance by Walter Brueggemann. The Sabbath is not simply about keeping rules but rather about becoming a whole person and restoring a whole society. The author calls out our 24/7 society of consumption\, a society in which we live to achieve\, accomplish\, perform\, and possess. We want more\, own more\, use more\, eat more\, and drink more. This book will help us to consider how keeping the Sabbath allows us to break this restless cycle and focus on what is truly important. \nThis is a 4 week online group that meets via Zoom from 7:30-9 Wednesday nights. A free copy of the book will be sent to you directly upon registration!

SUMMARY:We Protect Each Other: Immigrants in MA with “TPS” Fight Back Against Losing Status
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that over 1.1 million people in the United States (including more than 27\,000 in MA) are at risk of living their existing legal immigration status? The Trump Administration is doing everything they can to end “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS) for immigrants from 17 countries in which the conditions are unsafe for their return. Many of them have been in our communities for more than 15 or 20 years\, owning property\, starting small businesses\, and raising citizen children. Without a pathway to Permanent Residency\, TPS-holders from countries like Haiti\, Venezuela\, Nepal\, Honduras\, El Salvador\, and Afghanistan will be forced into an impossible choice: depart the U.S. by a given end date within the next year\, or lose their work permits and legal status and be at risk of detention and deportation at any time. \nCome hear from immigrant leaders in the MA TPS Committee\, who will share with us about their fight\, their wins in the courts so far\, and what they need from the greater faith community in MA to work alongside them for these protections. While in the long run a pathway to Legal Permanent Residency is needed for TPS-Holders\, right now we need to fight with them to be able to simply stay in their homes and prevent separation from citizen children. \nWe’ll also share about their newly released documentary and an opportunity to host showings in your own congregation with MA TPS Committee speakers available for post-viewing conversations. \nHosted by: The MA TPS Committee\, Episcopal City Mission\, UU Mass Action\, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism\, UniteBoston\, and Merrimack Valley Project\, and Essex County Community Organization \nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/fmlROfiVSga2aM62R0b-bw

SUMMARY:Be the Movement: Welcome the Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Turn your compassion into action.\nWelcome a Haitian family in New England \nImmigrants built Boston. And now shelters are scheduled to close starting June 30th. When that happens\, Haitian families already vulnerable will be pushed onto the street and into crisis. \nWelcomeNST has identified\, interviewed and vetted families at immediate risk with the Immigrant Family Services Institute in Mattapan. UniteBoston is partnering with them to stand up\, lock arms with your neighbors and form Neighborhood Support Teams (NST) that will welcome these families into your communities. NSTs help vulnerable families secure housing\, navigate schools\, find work\, and become part of your community. \nOur goal is to mobilize 50 Neighborhood Support Teams in Greater Boston to come alongside 50 Immigrant Families.  \nRev. Kelly’s church (Neighborhood Church of Boston) launched a Neighborhood Support Team last year to support a refugee family from the DRC and it has been an incredible experience. \nAs tensions escalate\, this movement enables you to put the superpower of your community to work\, welcoming someone from the outside to the inside. Your community was made for such a time as this. \nJoin for a zoom call next Tuesday August 5 from 6-7pm ET.  Register here. \n\nResources \n\nPartner Toolkit\nRegistration link to the “Welcome the Stranger\, New England!” Zoom on July 9 from 6-7pm\nInterest Form\n“Be the Movement. SUMMARY:Step into Black History: Footsoldiers
DESCRIPTION:How Everyday People from the Civil Rights Movement Continue to Inspire & Inform Anti-racist Action Today\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Black Freedom Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s called upon everyday people to take a stand against racism. As folks answered this call\, they became known as foot soldiers and\, collectively\, their actions contributed to the success of the movement \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn June 2024\, The Race & Christian Community Initiative (RCCI) convened 9 people from Boston to embark on a Southern Civil Rights Pilgrimage where we had the opportunity to meet with foot soldiers. Courageous Conversations Toward Racial Justice has invited some of these local pilgrims to share how their encounters with foot soldiers informed their understanding of activism and inspire them to take action today. The framing and introduction for this panel will be offered by John Williams\, Executive Director of the Center for Restorative Justice (CFRJ). The CFRJ hosts these Southern Civil Right Pilgrimages and will share about how you could participate in such an experience this summer or beyond. \nPlease RSVP HERE – Zoom link will be provided after RSVP.

SUMMARY:Faith Leaders Call with Dr. Brenda Cassellius
DESCRIPTION:Dear Faith Leaders\, \nBoston Public Schools needs your help! We have immediate openings for positions that are critical to the success of our students. We know that your communities join us in the belief that Boston students are all our children and deserve our City’s very best. \nThere are open positions for bus monitors\, cafeteria workers\, and custodians. We know students cannot learn if they cannot safely get to school\, if they are not able to access healthy and nutritious food\, and if their learning environment does not reflect the high level of achievement we know they are all capable of reaching. \nI invite you to join me and my team at a meeting on Wednesday\, November 3 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The meeting will take place on Zoom and we will send you a calendar invitation. Please confirm your participation via the invitation. \nWe are currently working to streamline our hiring and on-boarding processes to make it easier for staff to apply and once hired be on-boarded quickly. Physical and digital flyers with links to job postings have been developed for you to share with your congregations. If the 100 faith communities in Boston each help recruit four staff members\, we will meet our goal of filling upwards of 400 critical vacancies! \nThe Boston Public Schools Office of Recruitment\, Cultivation\, and Diversity will host recruitment fairs to support applicants with the application process and we will share those details with you as soon as they are scheduled. \nI look forward to further developing this campaign with you and your congregations. \nIn partnership\, \nBrenda \n\nTitle of the event:  BPS Recruitment and Hiring Campaign meeting\nDate of event:  Wednesday\, November 3rd\, 11am-12:00 pm\nZoom link:  https://k12-bostonpublicschools.zoom.us/j/84309422393

SUMMARY:Facing Our Racism: Becoming Conscious Partners Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 26\, 2021\, 12 – 4:30pm – Online via Zoom \n\n\n\n\nRegister here (Registration ends at 11am on the day of\, and the Zoom link will be sent right after that.)The killing of Daunte Wright\, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor galvanized White people to become “conscious partners” with our Black sisters and brothers to end racism. Crucial to this new understanding and awareness is the formation of genuine\, open\, truthful relationships between Black and White community members. You are invited to take part in a “Facing Our Racism: Becoming Conscious Partners” workshop which analyzes the systemic\, institutional\, policy\, and power-driven persecution and discrimination against Black Americans since the very beginning of slavery. The anniversary of George Floyd’s death reminds us that the work to combat racism is far from over. \nAbout the Facilitators \nDr. Connie Holmes\, EdD\, psychologist (ret.)\, counseled cancer patients and their families for 28 years in Boston and in the San Francisco Bay area. She is a member of the Reparations Community of Practice and Clerk of the Vestry of Good Shepherd Church in Watertown\, MA. She is available to conduct these workshops throughout the United States. Her great-grandfather perished in Theresienstadt\, a World War II concentration camp. Her exposure to the horrors of the Final Solution has motivated her to join the struggle for racial justice in the United States. \nDolores Moorehead\, MS\, APCC is the Lead Navigator/ Multi-Cultural Client Support Clinician at the Women’s Cancer Resource Center in Berkeley with over 30 years of experience that includes the American Cancer Society. She has worked with diverse populations including LGBTQIA+\, African Americans\, Latinos\, and Asian Pacific Islanders. She is committed to improving communication between doctors\, nurses\, and other medical professionals about the medical needs and access to care of diverse populations. \nTestimonials \nThe Rev. Tyrone Fowlkes\, Rector\, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church\, Raleigh\, NC: “In an era of George Floyd\, increased voter restrictions and racial disparities across vital areas of health\, income and education\, the time is now for us to wrestle with the ubiquitous and persistent racist policies and structures in our society. People of faith are not immune to such forces and have a significant role to play in this effort if ‘faithful witness’ has any meaning at all. Both Connie Holmes and Dolores Moorehead not only help us confront the damaging and lasting impact of systemic racism in both church and society but also why it matters. The bottom-line stares at us with an unsettling gaze: our failure to untangle the racist threads which have long woven patterns of dehumanizing pain and disenfranchisement\, will eventually strangle us all.”\n\nJean Kilbourne\, Senior Scholar\, Wellesley Centers for Women: “Dr. Connie Holmes has been passionately engaged for more than 50 years in the struggle for civil rights and the work of making authentic partnerships between Black and White Americans possible. Her energy\, imagination\, and eloquent leadership bring new life to the essential conversations we must have in order to make the progress we all so urgently need.\n\nRev. Dr. David Killian: “Connie Holmes and Dolores Moorehead are superb facilitators to help us to ‘face our racism’ and dismantle embedded structures of racial inequality and oppression. Their work is transformative and life-changing for the participants and vitally needed in our society today.”\n\nDolores Moorehead\, MS: “Dr. Connie Holmes and I worked together at the Women’s Cancer Resource Center in Oakland for four years. She has been able to use her family’s experiences to discuss how more alike we are as humans than different. Taking her commitment over the years to the civil rights movement\, Dr. Holmes creates an environment for Black and White individuals to talk about the topic of racial discrimination. She facilitates a conversation that allows participants to address their pain and shame so as to begin the healing process.”\n\nRev. Dr. Rodney Petersen: “Facing our Racism” (FOR) presents a challenging workshop. Just when we thought we were beyond all that\, Connie and Dolores take one down to deeper levels of engagement with racism and anti-racism.”\n\nBrenda Vaccaro\, Psy.D.: “As a psychologist and mental health innovator\, Dr. Holmes has forged and promoted therapeutic environments that prioritize social justice and heighten multicultural awareness. A tireless advocate for equitable access to support\, she has been a pioneer in acknowledging and addressing issues of oppression\, privilege\, and power. Her work reflects a deep commitment to redefining mental health services in a way that is more attuned and responsive to the race-based traumatic stress that burdens communities of color. Her approach empowers people to heal and to reclaim the path toward their best possible lives.”\nSponsors \nSt. Mary’s Church in Dorchester\, the Charles River Deanery\, Grace Church in Newton\,Temple Shalom in Newton\, Temple Beth Zion in Brookline\, ten other congregations\, and Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM)\, the greater Boston area’s oldest interfaith social justice organization that has been fighting racism since 1966. \n\n\nFor more information\, please email info@coopmet.org and check out: http://www.coopmet.org

SUMMARY:Thanksgiving Prayer for Front-Line Workers and First Responders
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday November 25th at St. Theresa’s Church in West Roxbury\, we are planning a Thanksgiving Virtual Prayer.  We are inviting leaders from different denominations and faiths to come together to have  a solid hour of prayer. We will be praying for front-line workers and first responders to the pandemic. Please send the flyer to all your congregants\, family members and community-based partners.  Let us listen to prayer from faith-based leaders you may or may not know.  It does not matter because we all play for the same team! \nZoom ID: 875 156 9017 \n-Tracy Litthcut\, Mayor’s Office of Faith Based Initiatives

SUMMARY:Churches Sharing Space to Support BPS This Fall
DESCRIPTION:This coming Monday\, the Boston Public Schools will be hosting a Zoom info session with Boston church communities regarding potential space sharing or willingness/ability to run programming or hosting students in a pod to serve students and families. We are interested in having you and other leaders attend if you have space to share OR if you are interested in potentially offering programs or hosting small groups of students in a pod setting. \nWe understand that churches may have questions and concerns about logistics\, staffing\, liabilities\, and other considerations that would be helpful to know in order to make informed decisions. Attendance at this info session does not mean a commitment to provide any of the mentioned services. \nZoom Info Session with the Boston Public Schools Regarding Space Sharing and/or Academic Enrichment Programming for SY20-21 \nMonday\, August 17th\, 2020 \n4:30-5:30 PM \nLink to be shared later. SUMMARY:In the Shadow of Your Wings: A Musical Bible Study on the Psalms
DESCRIPTION:The psalms were originally set to music; yet rarely do we have the opportunity to really listen to them. UniteBoston is partnering with Deus Ex Musica for a unique virtual event: a “musical bible study” in which participants listen to brand-new musical settings of two psalms\, then join together for discussion about how the musical interpretations help us experience the Scriptures. \nParticipants will watch pre-recorded live performances of classical vocal settings of Psalm 13 and Psalm 148\, each written by an award-wining contemporary classical music composer representing a different Christian tradition. After viewing each set of performances\, participants will engage in moderated small-group discussions. Since each psalm is set to music by more than one composer\, participants will hear how different musical responses to the same text bring to life various dimensions of each psalm. This provides a unique and memorable way for participants to experience the depth and beauty of Scripture in ways that promote both learning\, discipleship\, and community. It also provides a rare opportunity for Christians of all stripes to gather in fellowship and dialogue about something we all agree on: the power and importance of the Bible. No musical experience or expertise is required by any participants. \nJoin us for a FREE musical bible study to build connection\, renewal\, and hope. Click here to register and receive the Zoom link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/114037053898/ \nThis event is hosted by UniteBoston and Deus Ex Musica. UniteBoston is a Boston-based non-profit ministry dedicated to uniting Christians for gospel movement and the flourishing of our communities.
