SUMMARY:Showing Up Well: A Training for Volunteers on Genuine Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Every volunteer engagement that involves another person is a relationship. And like any relationship\, what we bring into it shapes what’s possible. \nOften volunteers’ biggest challenges aren’t logistical\, they’re invisible. The unspoken expectations we attach to our help\, the moments when our instinct to fix things gets ahead of what someone is asking for\, how our own cultural lens can shape — and sometimes distort — how we show up. \nUniteBoston is partnering with Sarah Blumenshine\, Director of Intercultural Ministries at the Emmanuel Gospel Center\, to offer a zoom training where we can all take an honest\, non-judgmental look at the mindsets that can quietly undermine the very relationships we’re hoping to build. We’re especially encouraging congregations and volunteers who have been part of our spring “Love Thy Neighbor” initiatives to join this opportunity! \nExpect honest conversation\, relatable scenarios\, and practical tools to help you engage with love and care. \nSign up here to receive the zoom link and help us spread the word!

SUMMARY:How Can Congregations and Groups Support Their New Neighbors

And we’ve seen people of faith step up in profound and powerful ways.\n\nThere are multiple ways for people to support their new neighbors. If your congregation can act now\, there is a great opportunity for additional financial support with a federal program with a July 31 deadline to register for additional funding.\n\nGuest Speakers Include:\n\nWelcome NST Director of Outreach Kasey Dillon\nJewish Family Services of MetroWest Executive Director Lino Covarrubias\nJessica Lasser\, member of Temple Beth Elohim\, Wellesley\, who has been part of Welcome Corp\n\nThis is a unique chance to play a role in helping new neighbors as they build their lives in our community. This event is perfect for community and religious leaders\, advocates for social justice\, and anyone passionate about fostering inclusivity and support for refugees. SUMMARY:Mending the Breach: Kingdom Conversations to Build Trust Across Deep Divides
DESCRIPTION:Have you struggled to converse with family members or friends from different perspectives? \nDo you feel it is better to avoid certain important\, yet difficult\, topics with family\, friends\, or church community than to enter into a conversation you worry will be unfruitful? \nDo you ache and hurt that there is so much division? \nDo you wish we could talk with one another rather than at one another? \nIf your answer to any of these is yes\, we want to invite you to practice having healthy conversations on topics that can be awkward\, triggering\, unsafe\, and difficult to engage. The only way we can change the course of polarization\, silos\, and echo chambers that are all too common in our culture and the church today is to practice the spiritual disciplines of active listening\, asking transformative questions\, and speaking with gentleness\, humility\, and self-control. \nJoin Christians from throughout Greater Boston for a series of five conversations on issues affecting the life & mission of the Church right now\, including restoring trust\, economic difference\, political affiliation\, and race. Our purpose is to practice and become more comfortable having hard conversations within the Body of Christ\, and by doing so create greater understanding across various lines of difference and truly learn and experience what it means to live out “unity in diversity.” \nThrough this series of intentional conversations\, we have the opportunity to be holistically formed more into the likeness of Christ by 1) thoughtfully engaging rather than avoiding difficult conversations about our diverse experiences\, and 2) learning how to live out the  fruit of the Spirit in these conversations that so easily trip us up.  \nThese conversations will be hosted by our team of facilitators who have been trained in Reflective Structured Dialogue\, a model for conversation and story-sharing across deep divides that nurtures empathy for those of differing perspectives and spiritual growth of loving God and neighbor. You will be placed in a small group of 4-5 people and meet weekly for five weeks together to engage in these conversations. In order to cultivate relationship-building\, we ask that participants commit to attending with minimal missed attendance and inform the facilitator in advance if they’ll have to miss a session. UniteBoston’s network spans historic divides across race\, denomination\, culture\, age\, etc\, so it’s likely that you will have the opportunity to hear from those you might not normally interact with. In doing so\, together we can uphold a “deep unity” that honors diverse viewpoints and models God’s call for reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18). \nSessions: \nSessions will take place on Zoom for five weeks on Monday evenings – April 11\, 18\, 25\, May 2\, 9 from 7:00 to 8:30pm \n-Week 1: Restoring Trust \n-Week 2: Economic Difference \n-Week 3: Political Affiliation & Voting Choices \n-Week 4: Racial & Ethnic Differences & the Church \n-Week 5: Overall reflection/application \nTo sign up\, click here. Sign-ups are due March 31st. \nIf you want to understand the difference between regular conversation and these conversations\, click here.

SUMMARY:RCCI Cohort Communities for White Evangelicals
DESCRIPTION:Cohorts are communities where Christians can learn about racism from a biblical perspective and develop the capacity to respond to it as an outworking of their faith. Our current cohorts are designed for White leaders shaped by the evangelical tradition\, and aim to create a space where they can come together to learn and do the self-work needed to engage issues related to race more effectively. RCCI understands leadership broadly and welcomes formal and informal leadership alike.  \nCohorts are six-month commitments through which people examine and respond to the ways racism impacts ourselves\, our society\, our Christian communities\, and faith. They are run in a seminar-style format for small groups of 6-8 people and utilize various methods\, including engaging books and media\, guest speakers\, discussion\, spiritual disciplines\, creative exercises\, and field trips. Cohorts value experiential and peer learning and aim to get beyond an intellectual understanding of race by engaging the whole person in mind\, body\, emotions\, and spirit. \nAt the end of each cohort\, participants go through an individual and communal discernment process regarding how they can take actions to contribute to the dismantling of racism in their sphere of influence. All alumni are also invited into RCCI’s support and accountability groups to receive ongoing resources to move from knowing and caring to action. \nClick here for more information.  \nClick here to apply by March 11 for our spring cohort!

SUMMARY:Trafficking 101
DESCRIPTION:Trafficking 101 will take place via zoom on Saturday\, March 5th from 10:00 to 12:00 pm. In our time together we will learn about trafficking here in the United States\, unpack the difference between legalization and decriminalization of prostitution\, and explore how the church can respond.  Most people are unaware that 70% of women who enter the sex trade are girls who have aged out of foster care. Most are unaware that the average age of entry in the United States is 12-years-old. And\, most are unaware at what they can do about it. In this training you will learn all this and more. This training is lead by Rev. Bonnie Gatchell. founder and director of Route One Ministry. Route One has reached women sexually exploited for more than 12 years. SUMMARY:A Long Repentance discussion group
DESCRIPTION:This January – February 2022\, Mako Nagasawa will be leading a new cohort of discussions in A Long Repentance\, about how Christian heresies influence our American racial and political climate\, and what we can do about it!\nPeople talk about issues of race and justice in the United States as issues of ‘justice and injustice.’  Sometimes we launch into debates about ‘the proper role of government.’  But that is not the original framework from which these issues were asked and debated. \nThe purpose of our discussion groups in A Long Repentance: Exploring Christian Mistakes About Race\, Politics\, and Justice in the United States is to show how these issues began as Christian heresies.  Colonialism changed Christian beliefs and practices.  Since Christians enacted and institutionalized these practices\, we bear a unique responsibility for changing them.  We must continue to resist the very heresies that earlier Christians put into motion.  The journey is long and challenging.  It may be impossible to see the end.  But along the way\, it is also inspiring and sometimes breathtaking.

SUMMARY:"How to start an English Class" workshop for churches and non-profit orgs
DESCRIPTION:We want to see churches and Christian non-profits start English classes here in Boston and beyond. \n\nBelow\, we have communicated our vision for multiplication to your church or ministry\, so you can present it to your leadership. \n\nINTRODUCTORY TRAINING:\n\nWHAT: Boston is a city filled with immigrant neighborhoods. Truly the nations are here!! Over the last three years\,  Youth With A Mission Boston has pioneered an ESL\, but see that the nations can’t be reached without multiplication. In our city\, in order to see the nations reached\, we must engage the local church. We know we aren’t the only city like this.\n\nWe envision a day when every church has an English class offered to their neighborhood\, and these students are receiving quality classes\, growing in trust with their teachers\, sharing life and finding the church as a safe place to grow in community. These nations\, some closed to the life-saving message of the gospel\, are receiving free and open access to Jesus here in our neighborhood!\n\n\nWe want churches to learn that English Class is a simple ministry for neighborhood reach HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHEN: January 7-8\, 2022\nFriday night: 7-9pm (EST)\nSaturday: 9am-5pm (EST)\n\nWHERE: ZOOM workshop – You can attend from home!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOURSE CONTENT:\n\n\nWHY ESL?\, lesson planning\, syllabus\, project design\, immigrant and refugee ministry\, incorporating the Bible into your classroom\, Cultural sensitivity in the classroom\, civics and citizenship\, etc\n\n\nCOST in USDollars:\n$50 per person (suggested donation)\n\nYour church attendees can register through tesol@ywamboston.org

SUMMARY:Leading Boldly in the Midst of a Community in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Vision New England’s Women in Christian Leadership “Leading Well” forum\, featuring Rev. Gloria White-Hammond\, entitled “Leading Boldly in the Midst of a Community in Crisis.”\n \n\n\n\n\nHistorians often discuss watershed moments—critical turning points in history that fundamentally change how people think about and do life. The past 1 ½ years has been a quintessential watershed moment in which many communities have experienced multiple painful crises simultaneously. Just as God raised up and equipped Esther to respond to the crisis in her day\, God is calling today’s Christian women leaders to step up with conviction\, step out on faith and step forward with courage. \n \n\n\nRev. Gloria White-Hammond\, M.D. is co-pastor of Bethel AME Church in Boston and a pediatrician who long practiced at the South End Community Health Center. She also co-directs the Harvard Medical School and Harvard Divinity School course\, “Medicine and Spirituality in Healing.” Rev. Gloria is a longtime champion of health equity and publicly speaks about COVID-19 vaccination as a pastor and a physician\, especially in communities of color. Rev. Gloria’s innovative ministries include Do The Write Thing\, a creative writing mentoring ministry for high-risk adolescent girls; My Sister’s Keeper\,  www.mskeeper.org \, a humanitarian and human rights organization that champions social justice for women and girls in conflict zones; and Shatter the Silence\, a ministry that addresses sexual victimization in communities of faith.

SUMMARY:"And Still We Rise..." UB's 2021 Virtual Fundraising Party
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, UniteBoston is celebrating our anniversary of 11 years being in ministry! We want to invite you to our fifth annual fundraising party on Thursday October 21 from 7:30 to 9:00pm around the theme of “And Still We Rise.” We were inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise” and chose this as our theme to recognize how people can overcome hardships through understanding their God-given dignity and the power of community. While the world is shaking\, the Christian community in Boston is rising from much turmoil and hardship into greater connectedness and cohesion to discover the power that comes from the collective ecclesia.  \nYou’re invited to gather virtually with the UniteBoston community near and far to hear personal stories that represent the heart of the theme. There is no cost to attend\, but there will be an opportunity to give and partner with us in our bridge-building work. \nRSVP to attend here! \n\nRead our Fundraising Letter \n“And Still We Rise” Art Contest!  \nAs part of this event\, we are also launching art contest\, where local artists are invited to submit artistic reflections around the theme of “And Still We Rise\,” such as a spoken word\, art\, dance\, or song. We are offering $200 for first prize\, and $100 for second prize\, and the artists will have the opportunity to share their pieces at our virtual event. Submissions are due on Friday October 15 – Click here to submit your entry!

SUMMARY:Leading Confidently In God’s Rescue Mission – Carolyn Custis James
DESCRIPTION:Vision New England – Women in Christian Leadership – Leading Well Forum Series \nIn our rapidly changing world\, women are learning how to draw from the attitudes and skills that are developed from our unique experiences as women. These distinct approaches to leadership achieve results\, but often in different ways. We invite Christian women in leadership on church staffs or in non-profits to join us online this year to explore what it means to lead well. This is a great opportunity to hear their voice and share yours…to listen\, ask questions\, and reflect with peers so that your own leadership is honed. \nOn September 24th hear from Carolyn Custis James in on free\, interactive zoom forum. God’s calling on His daughters is big. His plan from the beginning has been for his male and female image bearers together to reflect his heart for the world and look after things on his behalf. This is God’s call to leadership. Throughout scripture God often chooses the most unlikely people to advance his purposes for the world. Far too often human systems impede our ability to respond. How do we as women leaders confidently embrace our calling and encourage other women and girls to hear and step into their calling too? From her theological training and years of ministry experience\, Carolyn will challenge us to accept these divine assignments. \nCarolyn is an award winning author who thinks deeply about what it means to be a female follower of Jesus in a postmodern world. In 2013\, Christianity Today named her one of the 50 evangelical women to watch. She speaks regularly at church conferences\, colleges\, and for other Christian organizations both in the US and abroad and is a guest lecturer at various theological seminaries. Her speaking and writing ministry is dedicated to addressing the deeper needs and issues confronting both women and men as they endeavor to extend God’s kingdom together in a messy and complicated world. Her books include Malestrom:  Manhood Swept into the Currents of a Changing World and Half the Church: Recapturing God’s Global Vision for Women. \nTo register\, click here.
