SUMMARY:Abiding in Beloved Community: The Cory Johnson Program through the Lens of Literary Imagination; a Talk by Rev. Liz Walker
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we look at our Cory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing (CJP) trauma work through the lens of literary imagination. Activists\, intellectuals and artists throughout contemporary history have eluded to the beloved community as a place and mindset of grace filled justice and reconciliation. Through the words of Dr. Martin Luther King and literary artists including the incomparable                  Tony Morrison\, Reverend Liz Walker presents a meditation on CJP as the model of that beloved community\, a groundbreaking antidote for these troubled times. \nThursday\, 1/16 at 6:00 pm; Roxbury Presbyterian Church Social Impact Center; 328 Warren Street; Roxbury\, MA

SUMMARY:Connecting the Dots of Our Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Cory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing \nThursday\, 10/17: Connecting the Dots in Your Story \nOften we struggle with questions like “Why is my life so hard? “Will I always feel this overwhelmed?” and “Why do I feel so alone?” This evening will be led by the community companions of the Cory Johnson Program who have asked themselves these and other questions. Along with Wyatt Jackson\, one of our artists-in-residence\, we will provide a safe and engaging community space to consider the questions at the center of our own stories. Such questions can often connect and point the way to a deeper understanding about our lives.

SUMMARY:Healers of the Line: Recognizing & Healing Inherited Trauma
DESCRIPTION: Healers of the Line: Recognizing & Healing Inherited Trauma \nTHURSDAY 5/9 at 6:00 PM starting with dinner; FREE and CHILD CARE PROVIDED \nCory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing \nWe now know that profound suffering can cause changes to genetic expression\, potentially leading to someone in a future generation experiencing the symptoms of a trauma (wound) they didn’t actually experience. Effectively\, we are connected across generations through our wounds. Moreover\, the consequences of the suffering we experience can cause ripple effects to those we live with and around\, including our communities. There is much to learn and understand about these inherited traumas (wounds)\, including how we can address them now and become ‘Healers of the Line’ so that they don’t continue forward into future generations.\nTHIS NIGHT WILL FOCUS ON  A WAY TO CONSIDER YOUR OWN ANCESTRAL HISTORY AND HOW TO WORK WITH A MODEL ADDRESSING INHERITED TRAUMA\nPresented by Colleen Sharka\, LMHC\, Director\, Cory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing.

SUMMARY:Abiding in the Community: A Faith Based Response to a Neighborhood in Pain
DESCRIPTION:Abiding in the Community: A Faith Based Response to a Neighborhood in Pain is a conference day on Saturday 11/3/18 to highlight community ‘healing-centered’ support that strives to address the chronic individual and collective impact of trauma. Whether from  community violence\, racism\, structural oppression\, poverty\, addiction\, or various forms of interpersonal abuse\, trauma is at the core of a steadily eroding rupture of an individual’s sense of safety\, meaning in the world\, connection to self and others\, and personal agency. \nThis day is for all people interested in trauma healing and will offer: \n-a profound way of accompanying and remaining with individuals and communities who have experienced trauma and traumatic grief \n-an uncomplicated framework for educating people about trauma and the healing journey \n-an experience of Can We Talk – a program component that offers adults the opportunity to share their stories of trauma\, loss\, hope\, and healing; fostering connection and empowering individuals to take an active role in helping themselves and others heal. \nThe Cory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing\, led by Rev. Liz Walker with her team at Roxbury Presbyterian Church in Roxbury\, MA\, has been providing community trauma healing services for 4 years. Each week people are invited\, without cost or need for referral and with child care and a meal provided\, to attend program components that address the mind\, body\, and spiritual impacts of trauma. This day is so fortunate to be co-sponsored by the New England regional office of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS New England). They are interested in helping The Cory Johnson Program connect with people in New England and across the country who would like to learn more about this model. \nThis event is being offered for free due to generous funding! Here is the website for the conference and to register. \nhttps://communitybasedtraumahealingconference.com/

SUMMARY:Abide & Persevere: The Spiritual Essence of Post-Traumatic Healing
DESCRIPTION:Abide & Persevere:\nThe Spiritual Essence of Post-Traumatic Healing\n1st Annual Fall Conference\nSaturday\, November 4\, 2017\, from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm (registration 8:30 am)\nKeynote: Rev. Liz Walker\nLocation: Roxbury Presbyterian Church\n328 Warren Street\nRoxbury\, MA 02119 \nTrauma healing takes root at the very place where a caregiver’s or community’s ability to abide meets the perseverance of someone who is suffering. The abiding caregiver offers connection that fosters safety and the rebuilding of trust; informed by the values and beliefs reflected within a client’s perseverance in the face of overwhelming difficulties. The unfolding relationship provides sacred space and builds on the desire for healing through the eventual reorientation of a client’s sense of meaning\, which is at the core of a person’s spiritual understanding.\nThe day will offer participants the opportunities to:\n Learn about the current understanding of trauma and its impacts on the body\, mind\, and spirit;\n Explore how a caregiver’s/community’s ability to abide with a client and the client’s capacity to persevere are essential spiritual elements of post-traumatic healing;\n Identify the traumatic implications of racism and structural violence\, learning the unique\nrole community healing can offer in trauma recovery.\nThe conference will offer a psycho-spiritual framework for understanding the trauma healing process. Experiences of Roxbury Presbyterian Church’s community trauma healing program will be shared. The day will conclude with implications and best practices for individual and community healing. THIS CONFERENCE IS FOR EVERYONE INTERESTED IN TRAUMA HEALING!\nPresenters:\n Rev. Liz Walker\, Pastor\, Roxbury Presbyterian Church; and Executive Director of\nThe Roxbury Presbyterian Church Social Impact Center;\n Colleen Sharka\, LMHC\, Director of The Cory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing;\n Douglas Lomax\, Program Coordinator for Outreach and Addiction Services: The Cory Johnson Program for Post-Traumatic Healing; and Program Manager for the Men’s Health and Recovery Program at the Boston Public Health Commission. \nConference fee: $100 for clinicians and other professionals seeking CEUs; $75 for all others\nLunch is included in the fee.
