SUMMARY:Volunteers Needed to Serve in Local Schools!
DESCRIPTION:Last school year and this summer\, around 110 volunteers representing 19 churches and 3 Christian organizations worked remotely with students in 3 afterschool programs and 14 schools in Boston\, Cambridge\, and Chelsea! It was so encouraging to see Christians across greater Boston step in to support students and teachers during a challenging season.  Even though there were kinks to iron out\, challenges to communication\, and constant changes for teachers who had to handle hybrid teaching towards the end of the school year\, volunteers were very understanding and patient. Teachers were also appreciative. All of our partners wanted to continue working with the BEC and our church partners this school year! \nWould you consider mobilizing a team or sharing with church members the opportunity to support schools and students through volunteering as academic mentors? There is great interest for in-person volunteers for both schools and afterschool programs. But if remote tutoring is preferred\, we also have opportunities for that to happen. \nWant to learn more? Attend a 30-min info session – information listed here\n\nMore info at tiny.cc/BECtutors and in the attached flyer \nContact: Ruth Wong at rwong@egc.org \nMore Ways to Help \nBoston Public Schools really appreciated our churches’ cloth mask donations last year. They have requested donations again. Apparently ours were better quality and schools gave feedback about how they liked our masks.  If your church would like to donate cloth masks (can be purchased)\, see tiny.cc/LoveBostonmasks. \nLastly\, the BEC is mobilizing churches to host clothing donation drives for Catie’s Closet\, www.catiescloset.org. They serve many Boston schools as well as schools in the Merrimack Valley. \n\nTestimonials\n\nOne teacher shared in our debrief meeting about the academic enrichment afterschool program that the school ran: Students were looking forward to tutors coming. The students who were tutored were more calm [in class] and knew what was going on. Students-made a big change in. Tutors showed that answers come from their effort. The tutors changed the way our students looked at success…They were always looking forward to meeting the tutors. Students valued meeting people from outside.\n\nOne teacher shared that the school year was very tough for her: It was a very difficult year from a teacher’s perspective…Knowing that I could come to class and have another set of hands/eyes to help my kids was such a relief. Some days I would just come from a meeting and felt destroyed but had to keep a happy face. The volunteers made the year so much better. I made two friends who are pretty amazing women and I hope to continue working with in the future.\n\nOne other teacher who received volunteers late in the year shared her appreciation during the debrief\, but she also broke down in tears as she shared how difficult the year was for her personally (dealing with deaths and losses due to COVID).

SUMMARY:Tutors Needed for Local Schools and Afterschool Programs
DESCRIPTION:Even though it feels like the end of the school year is approaching\, there are still many weeks of learning left for students in our area. With the ever-shifting situation in schools regarding remote learning and in-person return of students to classrooms\, the Boston Education Collaborative (BEC) tries to stay up-to-date with our partnering schools and programs regarding their volunteer needs. \n\n\n\nPlease see the attached flyer and help share it out with your friends\, congregation\, and networks. The BEC is still accepting volunteers to help schools and afterschool programs. Remote tutoring is still needed in both spaces. However\, our partnering schools and programs in Boston and Chelsea have been expressing a need for in-person support as well. You can imagine the challenges for teachers and staff to run classes that have to be mindful of social distancing rules and for school teachers to teach to a group of students in person and another group online at the same time. \n\n\n\nWith the last three months\, we would love to do a final push for volunteers to help these teachers and students finish the school year strong and maximize learning time. Please help to share this and consider volunteering too – Click Here to Download a PDF Flyer to Share. \n\n\n\nInterested? \n\nIn-Person Tutoring Information – Click Here\nVirtual/Remote Tutoring Information – Click Here\nAttend an Information Session – Click Here\nTo sign up\, fill out this form

SUMMARY:Churches Sharing Space to Support BPS This Fall
DESCRIPTION:This coming Monday\, the Boston Public Schools will be hosting a Zoom info session with Boston church communities regarding potential space sharing or willingness/ability to run programming or hosting students in a pod to serve students and families. We are interested in having you and other leaders attend if you have space to share OR if you are interested in potentially offering programs or hosting small groups of students in a pod setting. \nWe understand that churches may have questions and concerns about logistics\, staffing\, liabilities\, and other considerations that would be helpful to know in order to make informed decisions. Attendance at this info session does not mean a commitment to provide any of the mentioned services. \nZoom Info Session with the Boston Public Schools Regarding Space Sharing and/or Academic Enrichment Programming for SY20-21 \nMonday\, August 17th\, 2020 \n4:30-5:30 PM \nLink to be shared later. RSVP with Ruth Wong\, rwong@egc.org. \nPlease pass this email along widely to Boston churches (or even businesses you’re connected to) that might be interested in this opportunity to partner with BPS.

SUMMARY:Continuing the Conversation on Education
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Things for Greater Boston church partnership network\, the Boston Collaborative\, the Boston HERC and the Boston Education Collaborative (Emmanuel Gospel Center) are excited to host an evening conversation that will build upon the momentum and energy that so many felt as a result of the great turnout at the fall clergy meeting with Superintendent Brenda Cassellius of the Boston Public Schools (BPS). This is a conversation for pastors and Christian leaders – It will be an opportunity to hear from additional BPS leaders and to dialogue with each other about how we can partner more strategically with the school system and other non-profit school partners to support the district’s goals around student and family engagement. \nWe are excited that our keynote speaker for the evening will be Monica Roberts\, Chief of Student\, Family & Community Advancement of BPS. \nDinner will be served. For more information or to register\, click here. Please contact Ruth Wong\, rwong[at]egc.org if you have any questions.
