SUMMARY:Be the Bridge For Boston: Conversations on Race with Family & Friends
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, UniteBoston is hosting a 5-part speaker series to help people understand various initiatives that are happening in Greater Boston towards systemic racial justice and nurture friendships across churches for accountability and support in actively working towards reconciliation\, equity\, and justice in our day-to-day lives. \n\n\n\nIn this concluding session\, Pastor Josh Wilson is our key speaker. Josh describes that he is a white guy who\, when Trayvon was murdered\, began waking up to fact that his friends of color were living in a different reality. He wasn’t wasn’t ok with what he saw; he was grieved by the racism affecting people he loved and devastated that the church he served was failing to live up to the liberating\, unifying Gospel it preached. This awareness sent him on a journey to reckon with and root out the racism in himself\, the church\, and the world. Over the past nine years\, that journey has taken him from social media to the streets to the black church and finally\, back home to dinner table conversations with his own family. Josh will be sharing a few postures and tactics that can disrupt assumptions\, open up dialogue\, and\, at least occasionally\, help others find their way toward repentance in conversations on race with families and friends. \n\n\n\nThere is no cost to attend\, but all donations will go to bless our guest speaker. SUMMARY:UniteBoston "Kingdom Conversations" Training
DESCRIPTION:Applications Due March 18 \nThis year\, our national discourse has become increasingly polarized: on racial (in)justice\, immigration\, “red-blue” divides\, and public health crises. Too often we find ourselves either avoiding difficult conversations or remaining in our own silos and echo chambers\, where we charge “the other side” of being immoral or even evil. Yet\, as Christians\, we are called to live in unity\, honoring diverse perspectives and unique gifts within the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-26) and loving our enemies (Mt. 5:44). In fact\, conflict around our deepest differences can become an opportunity for discipleship\, resilience\, and strengthening the bonds within – not a disruption. In doing so\, congregations can uphold a “deep unity” that honors diverse viewpoints and models God’s call for reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18). \nJoin us to experience the transforming power of dialogue through a 2-day “kingdom conversations” training. Reflective Structured Dialogue (RSD) is a model for conversation across deep divides to grow in our practice of loving God and neighbor\, bridging differences\, and building resilient communities. RSD addresses the dynamics of dysfunctional patterns of conversation and is now used across the US and in more than 25 other countries. RSD has enabled people to engage issues as broad as theological and political differences in a church to exploring specific ways that combatants and victims in civil wars in Liberia and Burundi can live together in peace.  \nParticipants will experience and practice the tools and techniques of RSD in the workshop and between-session application in their own communities. They will also participate in a pre-workshop preparatory process\, create plans for post-workshop application of their learning in their congregations/institutions and receive written and online resources for creating conversations in their communities. \nThe workshop will be taught by Bob Stains and Shelton Oakley Hersey. Bob has been equipping clergy and lay leaders with the skill-sets and mind-sets of RSD for the past 26 years in the US\, Europe and Asia\, having trained more than 30\,000 people world-wide. His workshops are highly rated by participants in both religious and secular settings and he continues to see their learning bear fruit in their communities of faith over many years. Shelton serves as a Spiritual Director with Nuos Formation\, companioning churches\, businesses\, non-profits\, and individuals in various ways to help them experience greater intimacy with God and to live out of their values and into their fullest and healthiest potential. This includes designing and facilitating conversation and training spaces called Kingdom Conversations\, a spiritual formation tool to help churches\, individual Christians and communities to engage in harder conversations with greater courage\, equity\, healing\, and fruitfulness. \nStructured dialogue can help when differences threaten to become – or have become – divisive and ongoing relationships and work are threatened. This workshop is specifically designed to engage Boston-based Christian leaders from congregations and non-profits to help equip them to engage in differences about: \n-Cultural\, racial\, and political ideologies  \n-Budget issues\, especially in the case of shortfalls/cutbacks or expansions into new programming in churches and non-profits \n-Worship issues\, especially around traditional/contemporary music \n-Calling a new clergy person or dealing with divisions when clergy depart \n-Mission and vision in churches and non-profits  \n-Theology and its application to daily life of congregants in churches \n-Identity and theological interpretation (e.g. race\, gender\, sexual orientation\, etc.)  especially in terms of who is welcome to participate and who is invited/authorized to lead in churches and non-profits \n-The integration of traditions in blended / multicultural / merging churches \n-And more… \nDue to a generous grant by the Ministry in the City Hub\, we are able to provide this 2-day training at minimal cost ($100 per participant; scholarships are available). The all-day training dates will be April 17 and May 1st from 8:30am to 4:30pm and we will be providing this training opportunity to 12 to 20 Christian leaders who are based in the Greater Boston-area. Priority will be given to participants who apply in teams from their congregation or Christian non-profit. \nThere have always been and will always be differences of opinion and perspectives. Yet we are called to love and respect in the midst of disagreements. Bob has worked with many other Christian and Jewish communities\, small and large throughout his career as a consulting family therapist and as a dialogue practitioner. He lives in Danvers and is a member of All Saints Episcopal Church of the North Shore. \nShelton Oakley Hersey – Shelton has sought out\, participated\, and facilitated spaces working toward holistic development of people and systems over the past decade. She has experience in diverse contexts\, from low income neighborhoods of Los Angeles and Fuller Theological Seminary\, where Shelton obtained a Masters in Intercultural Studies\, to South Africa townships\, and the multi-ethnic church of America. She also serves as a Spiritual Director with Nuos Formation\, companioning churches\, businesses\, non-profits\, and individuals in various ways to help them experience greater intimacy with God and to live out of their values and into their fullest and healthiest potential. Craig has worked for the Navigators for 40 years\, including previous staff assignments in New Hampshire\, Germany\, and Virginia. Craig and his wife\, Nancy are members of Highrock Church and have 4 children and 10 grandchildren. \nMako Nagasawa is the director of The Anastasis Center for Christian Education and Ministry\, which focuses on curriculum development applying early Christian teaching on restorative justice and healing atonement to modern day ministry. He and his wife Ming and their kids live in intentional Christian community; he is on the Elder Team of his church\, Neighborhood Church of Dorchester. He is the author of Abortion Policy and Christian Social Ethics in the United States\, and contributed to Honor\, Shame\, and the Gospel: Reframing Our Message and Ministry\, and also the NIV God’s Justice Bible.

UniteBoston is offering a free\, brief\, virtual workshop introducing dialogue skills for bridging divides that you can implement in your own context. SUMMARY:UB's "Be the Bridge for Boston" Spring Groups
DESCRIPTION:At UniteBoston\, we recognize the need to address the sin of racism and the pervasive inequities that persist in our city and nation. We recognize that justice is not peripheral\, but intrinsic to the gospel\, and Christians should be leading the way in the movement towards racial justice today.  \nLast fall\, UniteBoston launched a “Be the Bridge” Zoom group\, where 28 people engaged in weekly conversation with Latasha Morrison’s “Be the Bridge” curriculum. We have heard that there are at least 9 other Boston-area churches that have utilized racial justice curriculum\, and this spring\, we are seeking to build on this momentum together across churches. The goal for this spring is to help people  understand various initiatives that are happening in Greater Boston towards systemic racial justice and to nurture friendships across churches for accountability and support in actively working towards reconciliation\, equity\, and justice in our day-to-day lives. \nWe will be hosting a bimonthly speaker series from February to June with locally-focused resources and speakers who are working in a particular aspect of justice (education\, housing\, incarceration/police reform\, economics) to share with the group. Each session will include a 20-minute presentation\, followed by Q & A\, practical action steps\, and prayer. This speaker series is open to the public for anyone to join (1 hour total) \nFollowing the speaker\, there will be small groups that will meet for 30 minutes with people who have committed to attending the four speaker series talks and meeting at least one other time per month for support and accountability in living out God’s call for racial justice in our day-to-day lives. \nGroup size is approximately 8-10 people with intentional diversity given to age\, race\, gender\, denomination\, etc. We may form themed groups based on different communities where individuals are seeking to implement racial justice (workplace\, church\, family/friends\, school\, neighborhood) \nThe “Be the Bridge for Boston” groups are open to anyone who has done significant introductory racial justice learning/work with Be the Bridge or another program. If you are looking for more of an introductory learning group on racial justice\, email Rev. SUMMARY:UniteBoston's Fall Be the Bridge Group

We recognize that justice is not peripheral\, but intrinsic to the gospel\, and Christians should be leading the way in the movement towards racial justice today. \nUniteBoston is launching a Be the Bridge Zoom group to foster intentional conversation about diversity and racial reconciliation\, empowering people to be the bridge between people divided by racial and cultural differences. We have found Latasha Morrison’s book\, “Be the Bridge” to be one of the most accessible books on the topic. Our goal for this group is for Christians throughout the city to gain a shared and biblically-grounded understanding of the process of restorative reconciliation – including lament\, confession\, forgiveness\, righting wrongs\, and restoring relationships. By committing to do this together\, we create a pathway for the Church in Boston to meaningfully address the sin of racism in its various forms as it has existed in history and as it exists today. \nIt will take place on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm via Zoom from October 1 to December 17. The group will be led by leaders of different races – see the biographies below. Together\, we can courageously endeavor healthy dialogue and transformation of our communities.  \nThe video below will give you a snapshot into the groups. Jacob Urena is a commissioned missioner in The Order of St. Martin de Porres\, a religious order within the Diocese of the Good Shepherd serving the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches (CEEC). The CEEC intentionally brings together three streams of the Church: Scripture\, Spirit\, and Sacrament. Jacob has worked hands-on in the formation of the socio-religious order locally in the Boston area and his sole motivations are on the upward mobility of every individual\, especially those ostracized and forgotten. Rev. Jacob has worked as an advocate and organizer for justice in his community in a variety of ways\, including organizing community forums and prayer rallies. \nSeong Park \n \nA greater Boston native\, Seong has spent the last 6 years working in the social impact sector in Myanmar. During this time\, she served at an international church that brings together Christians from diverse countries\, denominations\, and backgrounds\, and partners with local churches to support their growth in the ethnically diverse country of Myanmar. Seong finds great encouragement in witnessing God transform messy church families into communities that repent\, relearn\, and rebuild together to better reflect Christ’s love and justice for the world. Since returning home during the pandemic\, she’s been attending the Korean Church of the Lord in Boston\, the same church where she grew up. \nRev. Kelly Fassett \nKelly has served as the Executive Director for UniteBoston since 2012 and has been the catalyst for UniteBoston’s bridge-building work throughout Christians in the region. She has a certificate in Christian Foundations from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She also graduated with her Masters of Divinity in Global and Community Engagement at Boston University in 2019\, with certificates in Religion and Conflict Transformation as well as International Mission and Ecumenism. Kelly and her husband Andrew are both ordained ministers with the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts\, have one daughter named Abigail\, and live in an intentional Christian community in the Dorchester area. \nPradeepan Parthiban \n \nPradeepan moved to Boston from Austin\, Texas\, where he worked to equip local churches in disciple making\, house church planting and helping marginalized communities. He continues the same ministry in Boston helping the members of Antioch Greater Boston walk out for biblical justice through discipleship and evangelism. Pradeepan also serves as a consultant for entities seeking to use technology to solve global human rights issues\, with a focus on using AI to combat modern slavery. \nBrent and Karen Brown \n \nBrent and Karen have served in ministry together for the past eleven years and both have over 20 years of ministry experience. They have been Youth Workers and Youth Directors at churches in Lynnfield and Lynn. Brent and Karen were also co-leaders of the Young Adult ministry at Remix Church and they completed their first year at the SNEMN School of Ministry to obtain pastoral credentials with the Assemblies of God. Brent and Karen are passionate about racial reconciliation and are members of Be the Bridge and the Cyrene Movement. Brent and Karen have been married for eleven years and are the proud parents of five and grandparents to Bentley and London. They are currently attending Impact Church in Medford.

SUMMARY:In the Shadow of Your Wings: A Musical Bible Study on the Psalms
DESCRIPTION:The psalms were originally set to music; yet rarely do we have the opportunity to really listen to them. UniteBoston is partnering with Deus Ex Musica for a unique virtual event: a “musical bible study” in which participants listen to brand-new musical settings of two psalms\, then join together for discussion about how the musical interpretations help us experience the Scriptures. \nParticipants will watch pre-recorded live performances of classical vocal settings of Psalm 13 and Psalm 148\, each written by an award-wining contemporary classical music composer representing a different Christian tradition. After viewing each set of performances\, participants will engage in moderated small-group discussions. Since each psalm is set to music by more than one composer\, participants will hear how different musical responses to the same text bring to life various dimensions of each psalm. This provides a unique and memorable way for participants to experience the depth and beauty of Scripture in ways that promote both learning\, discipleship\, and community. SUMMARY:Love Thy Neighbor: COVID Grocery Delivery
DESCRIPTION:Jesus’ call for us to “love thy neighbor” presents a unique challenge during this time of social distancing. We currently have a “Love Thy Neighbor” campaign that showcases the diverse ways in which Christians throughout Greater Boston demonstrate love and connect with their neighbors in new and unexpected ways. \nLove Thy Neighbor Grocery Delivery \nWe have partnered with Park Street Church on a program in which Christians throughout the Greater Boston area can assist families with basic food needs. This program is focused on families and households who have someone that tested positive for COVID-19\, by providing them with groceries. Working in partnership with Massachusetts COVID-19 Community Tracing Collaborative (CTC) at the Department of Public Health\, the program puts each volunteer in contact with a particular family within the person’s designated zip code. The volunteers then have 48 hours to purchase and deliver groceries to their assigned families. Our goal is to serve 20 people per day\, or 100 per week! As of January 6\, 2021\, 126 volunteers from 31 churches were able to provide 14\,438 meals! In fact\, 14% of families requesting groceries through the State of Massachusetts were met by this program! \nHow Can You Help? \nIf you would like to be involved in this beautiful and much needed initiative\, please fill out the Registration Form  and help us spread the word! To get started\, we need to identify individuals who are able and willing to purchase and deliver food in a timely manner within their community. \nThank You! \nWe dream about coming together as the whole Body of Christ across Boston\, and rising up to “love thy neighbor” by meeting this practical need is a great way to get started. SUMMARY:2020 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an international initiative where Christians worldwide are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (John 17:21).Locally\, UniteBoston coordinates evening collaborative gatherings of fellowship\, prayer and worship from January 18-25 annually. \n\nIn 2020\, the theme is “They Showed Us Unusual Kindness\,” (Acts 28:2) which was chosen by Christians in Malta. Malta\, an island in the Mediterranean Sea\, received the Christian faith through the efforts of the Apostle Paul\, after he was shipwrecked there while travelling to Rome (Acts 27:18 – 28:10). The local islanders showed Paul and the early disciples unusual kindness and hospitality through building a fire and welcoming them in\, despite the rain and cold. This posture of hospitality and welcoming of the stranger is a strong theme throughout the Biblical narrative. In a world where deep differences often keep people divided\, it’s as we adopt a posture of showing “unusual kindness” to other Christians and people of all backgrounds that we become witnesses of God’s love to all people. \nJoin in! \nMark Your Calendars – You are invited to mark your calendars and plan to attend the evening gatherings! SUMMARY:Course on Christian Unity this Spring at Boston University
DESCRIPTION:Are you passionate about UniteBoston’s ministry to heal divides between various Christian groups? There is a class on this topic taking place this spring at Boston University entitled: “The Ecumenical Movement: Streams of Engagement and Liturgical Intersections.” This course “examines the Ecumenical Movement and its implications for the life of the churches in the 21st century. The class will treat major streams of interchurch engagement including mission\, faith and order\, and life and work\, and will give attention to ecumenical questions regarding worship and sacraments. In addition\, the course will consider contemporary models of Christian unity as well as Christian dialogue with other faith traditions.” \nIt is taught by Dr. Tom Best\, former Director of the WCC Commission on Faith and Order in the World Council of Churches\, and Dr. Karen Westerfield-Tucker\, a United Methodist Elder and member of the Joint Commission for Dialogue between the World Methodist Council and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. DESCRIPTION:Join together with Christians throughout Boston for the anchor worship service during the 2019 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, hosted by downtown area congregations. This year’s theme is “Justice\, Only Justice\, You Shall Pursue\,” (Deuteronomy 16:20) and this prayer service will focus attention on how we can contribute to acts of unity\, justice and mercy in our personal lives and within our communities. Let’s stand together in prayer in the midst of our divisions\, witnessing to God’s work of peace and justice! \nPartner churches for this worship service include the Cathedral of St Paul\, the Paulist Center\, and the Church of the Covenant\, and we hear word of many other clergy who will be participating. We are inviting clergy to come and process into this worship service together – We’d like to honor you for your ministry in Boston. Our preacher for this gathering is Ylisse Bess Washington\, who will be speaking on “Justice\, only justice\, you shall pursue.” Ylisse earned her Masters of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology in Spring 2017. \nAll are welcome\, and we appreciate your help getting the word out to local congregations.
