With over 45\,000 Christian denominations and countless divides over race\, gender\, theology\, and politics\, the Church’s fractured witness stands in stark contrast to Jesus’ prayer that we would be one (John 17). \nA team of diverse Christian leaders in Boston recognized this gap and came together to ask:\nWhat kind of discipleship is needed to form leaders who uphold God’s call for unity and oneness in today’s world? \nThrough prayer\, study\, and listening\, UniteBoston has been on a three-year journey of developing the Beloved Community Lab\, a unique opportunity for Christian leaders to come together across lines of difference to learn and practice unity\, justice\, and reconciliation in their leadership contexts. \nWe call this a “lab” because it combines core theological concepts with real-world application through case studies\, interactive exercises\, and spiritual practices. This cohort is a space for spiritual formation—shaping participants into peacemakers and reconcilers\, growing into the life and way of Jesus. We try to create a house environment that prioritizes creating safe spaces for communication\, hospitality\, and shared fun. The things we do together are based on the skillsets and interests of each person\, and among many other things\, we’ve enjoyed exploring Franklin Park\, morning prayer times\, gardening\, creative arts nights\, lively discussion\, and board games. We seek to support each other as we grow in faith and being a light for the gospel in our neighborhood\, workplaces and beyond. \nHouse Details: The 3-story\, 5-bedroom house was recently remodeled. The bedrooms are sunny and large\, with hardwood floors throughout. There is a large living and dining room on the first floor\, and kitchen with new appliances. The house has a porch in the front\, with a large back deck and small yard in the back too. There is also a private parking area available in the back of the house. There is free laundry in the basement as well as limited additional storage space. There is also a guest room on the third floor that we use together for family and friends who are in town. Rent prices include utilities & Internet. \nNeighborhood Details: Our home is a 10′ walk to Franklin Park and Harambee Park\, a 5′ walk to the Talbot Ave commuter rail station\, and 1 mile to Shawmut on the red line. It is located on a residential street that is relatively quiet and safe\, though our neighborhood can be a bit noisy at night in the summer. DESCRIPTION:Turn your compassion into action.\nWelcome a Haitian family in New England \nImmigrants built Boston. And now shelters are scheduled to close starting June 30th. When that happens\, Haitian families already vulnerable will be pushed onto the street and into crisis. \nWelcomeNST has identified\, interviewed and vetted families at immediate risk with the Immigrant Family Services Institute in Mattapan. UniteBoston is partnering with them to stand up\, lock arms with your neighbors and form Neighborhood Support Teams (NST) that will welcome these families into your communities. NSTs help vulnerable families secure housing\, navigate schools\, find work\, and become part of your community. \nOur goal is to mobilize 50 Neighborhood Support Teams in Greater Boston to come alongside 50 Immigrant Families.  \nRev. SUMMARY:Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an international initiative where Christians worldwide are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Locally\, UniteBoston coordinates evening collaborative gatherings of fellowship\, prayer and worship from January 18-25 annually. \nThis Year’s Theme: In 2025\, Christians mark the 1\,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea\, where key doctrinal disputes about the Trinity and the nature of Christ were resolved\, resulting in the Nicene Creed—a foundational statement of Christian faith and unity. The Nicene Creed is the Christian “symbol” of agreed doctrine and also the statement of faith for UniteBoston. This commemoration invites Christians to celebrate what unites them through the Creed while reflecting on the divisions that still persist today. \n \n\n\n \n\n\nClick above to watch a reflection on the significance of the Nicene Creed from Dr. Elizabeth M. DESCRIPTION:Join Christians from all over New England for a Vision New England Pentecost virtual day of prayer this Friday\, May 17. \nAt Pentecost\, we remember how God’s spirit filled Jesus’ disciples and empowered them to live and walk in the way of Jesus. Each hour of prayer will be led by different churches in every New England state. We’ll be praying as the Body of Christ\, in unity\, for New England and what God is doing\, and might yet do\, here. \nThere will be prayer happening for a 24-hour period\, and UniteBoston’s hour is from 2:00 to 3:00pm on Friday May 17. Please join us for as long as you want and as often as you want! \nPRAYER POINTS FOR NEW ENGLAND: \n1. FRESH LOVE FOR GOD: Ask the Lord to help the church in New England fully love Him with our heart\, soul\, mind\, and strength. (Mark 12:30) \n2. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special\, set aside space during the annual Vision New England Leaders Gathering for women in Christian leadership to gather for dessert and meaningful conversation. Locally\, UniteBoston coordinates evening collaborative gatherings of fellowship\, prayer and worship from January 18-25 annually.\n\nThis year’s theme\, liturgies\, and prayer guides were developed together by Christian churches from Burkina Faso in western Africa. This year’s theme is based on the text from the Gospel of St Luke: “You shall love the Lord your God … and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). In response to the question of who is my neighbor\, Jesus responds with a parable illustrating love extending far beyond the limits expected by the lawyer. It is not shared identities that should prompt us to come to the aid of the other\, but love of our ‘neighbor.’ Here in Boston\, it may be common to relate to one another like Samaritans and Jews\, divided culturally and theologically and living with unfriendly or hostile relationships. However\, Jesus points us to a different way: to engage with those on the “other side” and even understand the situations of one another so intricately that we can ‘pour oil or wine’ on one another’s wounds. Our times of insecurity and fear confront us with a reality where distrust and uncertainty come to the forefront of relationships. DESCRIPTION:Save the Date and join us for UniteBoston’s Fundraising Party at PKL on January 14! \nStart off 2024 with some fun with the UniteBoston community. This year’s fundraiser will be at PKL\, a venue in South Boston where we will have the lounge area to hang out\, play cornhole and shuffleboard\, eat great food\, and hear about what is coming next for UB. This is our seventh annual fundraiser – there is no cost to attend\, but there will be an opportunity to give to UniteBoston’s bridge-building work. Kids are welcome too! \nOur goal is to raise $15\,000 by January 14\, 2023 to support the allocation of resources to refine our strategic planning process\, explore available resources related to barriers to unity\, evaluate gaps\, and collaborate with local partners. Plus\, for this year’s fundraiser\, UB is providing a matching grant up to $5\,000 for the Race & Christian Community Initiative’s experiential learning weekend on the history of slavery in Boston. SUMMARY:Mending the Breach: Kingdom Conversations to Build Trust Across Deep Divides
DESCRIPTION:Have you struggled to converse with family members or friends from different perspectives? \nDo you feel it is better to avoid certain important\, yet difficult\, topics with family\, friends\, or church community than to enter into a conversation you worry will be unfruitful? \nDo you ache and hurt that there is so much division? \nDo you wish we could talk with one another rather than at one another? \nIf your answer to any of these is yes\, we want to invite you to practice having healthy conversations on topics that can be awkward\, triggering\, unsafe\, and difficult to engage. The only way we can change the course of polarization\, silos\, and echo chambers that are all too common in our culture and the church today is to practice the spiritual disciplines of active listening\, asking transformative questions\, and speaking with gentleness\, humility\, and self-control. \nJoin Christians from throughout Greater Boston for a series of five conversations on issues affecting the life & mission of the Church right now\, including restoring trust\, economic difference\, political affiliation\, and race. Our purpose is to practice and become more comfortable having hard conversations within the Body of Christ\, and by doing so create greater understanding across various lines of difference and truly learn and experience what it means to live out “unity in diversity.” \nThrough this series of intentional conversations\, we have the opportunity to be holistically formed more into the likeness of Christ by 1) thoughtfully engaging rather than avoiding difficult conversations about our diverse experiences\, and 2) learning how to live out the  fruit of the Spirit in these conversations that so easily trip us up.  \nThese conversations will be hosted by our team of facilitators who have been trained in Reflective Structured Dialogue\, a model for conversation and story-sharing across deep divides that nurtures empathy for those of differing perspectives and spiritual growth of loving God and neighbor. You will be placed in a small group of 4-5 people and meet weekly for five weeks together to engage in these conversations. In order to cultivate relationship-building\, we ask that participants commit to attending with minimal missed attendance and inform the facilitator in advance if they’ll have to miss a session. UniteBoston’s network spans historic divides across race\, denomination\, culture\, age\, etc\, so it’s likely that you will have the opportunity to hear from those you might not normally interact with. DESCRIPTION:A Reckoning in Boston is a documentary which focuses on a deep racial history between black and white communities within the city of Boston. We explore race dynamics that contribute to marginalization\, gentrification and community violence. The documentary assesses how we sit as moral witnesses and reconcile our experiences with racism and racial marginalization\, towards acknowledgment\, resolution\, change. In this documentary\, we seek understanding of our unseen lived experiences\, in a very vulnerable way. We seek to educate and teach a better understanding about how racial dynamics affect every aspect of our lives.  \nSpirituality is an underlying dimension of the community activism and introspection presented in the film. At this event Co-producer\, Kafi Dixon\, founder of Common Good Cooperatives\, will discuss the role of Black Churches and spirituality as sites of resistance and joy in communities. \nJoin us for a community screening of the film followed by an open community discussion about faith spaces as sites of activism. He attended Northpoint Bible College and got his undergrad in Biblical Theology and Youth and Family Ministry. In 2015\, he started working at the Boston Project Ministries as a Youth Program Manager until 2021. He now works full-time with Young Life as an Area Director to help raise new leaders and develop new ministries to connect with young people in Boston. He is married to his lovely wife Mary Grant who works with him as a Direct Ministry Staff for Young Life. \n\n\n\nKatie Lamirato: Katie is a 26-year-old law student at Northeastern. Originally from Colorado\, she loves skiing\, mountains\, and honestly all things outdoors. She came to Boston in 2014 to attend Boston College and ended up staying here. She thinks chocolate and peanut butter is a glorious food combination and being fed is her primary love language. Her church family is Antioch Roxbury\, a local house church network. \n\n\n\nAndrea St. Louis: Andrea is a woman on a journey to know God’s heart\, and to encourage\, empower\, equip\, and educate women in the pursuit of purpose. She is a recent graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (CUME Boston)\, with a Master of Arts in Urban Ministry Leadership. She also holds an MBA in Entrepreneurial Thinking & Innovative Practices from Bay Path University in Longmeadow\, MA\, and a Bachelor of Science in Management from the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford\, CT. Andrea is the Owner of StepIn2Purpose Consulting where she supports coaching clients in learning to “shed the shell” and pursue purpose-filled goals and friendships. She is also the Owner of The Tatted Professionals\, providing writing and business consulting services to help individuals and entrepreneurs create their professional presence. In addition to her entrepreneurial pursuits\, Andrea is an Adjunct Professor\, Author\, workshop facilitator\, speaker\, and book club host. She is privileged to share her life’s journey with her husband\, Matthew\, and their two beautiful boys. \n\n\n\nJane Kyong Chung: Born and raised in the New York City area\, Jane was called to New England after God changed her life during college. She received her M.Div from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and currently serves as the English Congregation’s pastor at North Boston Korean United Methodist Church in Andover\, MA. Jane also serves as pastoral staff on ARISE Ministries\, a regional non-profit that contends for the revival of the second generation of the Korean Church of New England. Her prayer is that the next generation would encounter the life-changing Jesus that set her free. Jane is also the research specialist for the Thriving Congregations Team at the Center for Urban Ministerial Education in Roxbury. She is passionate about how research can be used to build up the Church (with emphasis on immigrant churches and churches of color) by better informing its future. In her free time\, she loves jazz in vinyl form\, coffee\, interior design\, and basketball. \n\n\n\nFugi Acevedo: Fugi is a Boston-born poet and visual creative who drives to create art from a place of vulnerability. Along with the arts\, he uses powerlifting to discover mental and physical strength while being actively involved in the community. Fugi is a strong believer that both therapy and having a relationship with God are essential.

Josh describes that he is a white guy who\, when Trayvon was murdered\, began waking up to fact that his friends of color were living in a different reality. He wasn’t wasn’t ok with what he saw; he was grieved by the racism affecting people he loved and devastated that the church he served was failing to live up to the liberating\, unifying Gospel it preached. This awareness sent him on a journey to reckon with and root out the racism in himself\, the church\, and the world. Over the past nine years\, that journey has taken him from social media to the streets to the black church and finally\, back home to dinner table conversations with his own family. SUMMARY:UniteBoston "Kingdom Conversations" Training
DESCRIPTION:Applications Due March 18 \nThis year\, our national discourse has become increasingly polarized: on racial (in)justice\, immigration\, “red-blue” divides\, and public health crises. Too often we find ourselves either avoiding difficult conversations or remaining in our own silos and echo chambers\, where we charge “the other side” of being immoral or even evil. Yet\, as Christians\, we are called to live in unity\, honoring diverse perspectives and unique gifts within the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-26) and loving our enemies (Mt. 5:44). In fact\, conflict around our deepest differences can become an opportunity for discipleship\, resilience\, and strengthening the bonds within – not a disruption. In doing so\, congregations can uphold a “deep unity” that honors diverse viewpoints and models God’s call for reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18). \nJoin us to experience the transforming power of dialogue through a 2-day “kingdom conversations” training. Reflective Structured Dialogue (RSD) is a model for conversation across deep divides to grow in our practice of loving God and neighbor\, bridging differences\, and building resilient communities. RSD addresses the dynamics of dysfunctional patterns of conversation and is now used across the US and in more than 25 other countries. RSD has enabled people to engage issues as broad as theological and political differences in a church to exploring specific ways that combatants and victims in civil wars in Liberia and Burundi can live together in peace.  \nParticipants will experience and practice the tools and techniques of RSD in the workshop and between-session application in their own communities. They will also participate in a pre-workshop preparatory process\, create plans for post-workshop application of their learning in their congregations/institutions and receive written and online resources for creating conversations in their communities. \nThe workshop will be taught by Bob Stains and Shelton Oakley Hersey. Bob has been equipping clergy and lay leaders with the skill-sets and mind-sets of RSD for the past 26 years in the US\, Europe and Asia\, having trained more than 30\,000 people world-wide. His workshops are highly rated by participants in both religious and secular settings and he continues to see their learning bear fruit in their communities of faith over many years. Shelton serves as a Spiritual Director with Nuos Formation\, companioning churches\, businesses\, non-profits\, and individuals in various ways to help them experience greater intimacy with God and to live out of their values and into their fullest and healthiest potential. This includes designing and facilitating conversation and training spaces called Kingdom Conversations\, a spiritual formation tool to help churches\, individual Christians and communities to engage in harder conversations with greater courage\, equity\, healing\, and fruitfulness. \nStructured dialogue can help when differences threaten to become – or have become – divisive and ongoing relationships and work are threatened. This workshop is specifically designed to engage Boston-based Christian leaders from congregations and non-profits to help equip them to engage in differences about: \n-Cultural\, racial\, and political ideologies  \n-Budget issues\, especially in the case of shortfalls/cutbacks or expansions into new programming in churches and non-profits \n-Worship issues\, especially around traditional/contemporary music \n-Calling a new clergy person or dealing with divisions when clergy depart \n-Mission and vision in churches and non-profits  \n-Theology and its application to daily life of congregants in churches \n-Identity and theological interpretation (e.g. race\, gender\, sexual orientation\, etc.)  especially in terms of who is welcome to participate and who is invited/authorized to lead in churches and non-profits \n-The integration of traditions in blended / multicultural / merging churches \n-And more… \nDue to a generous grant by the Ministry in the City Hub\, we are able to provide this 2-day training at minimal cost ($100 per participant; scholarships are available). The all-day training dates will be April 17 and May 1st from 8:30am to 4:30pm and we will be providing this training opportunity to 12 to 20 Christian leaders who are based in the Greater Boston-area. As a Traction Ministry partner and member of Neighborhood Church of Dorchester\, Carla leads in radically sharing her home with the goal of self-sufficiency and home ownership for those who have been marginalized. Carla brings her deep compassion and boldness of vision to community and political organizing to push back against gentrification and mass incarceration as well as other movements that devalue the contributions and humanity of black and brown people. \n  \n\n\n\nLaura Mitchell serves on staff at Central Square Church in Children’s Ministry and admin support for Traction Ministry. In partnership with Leslie and Carla\, Laura has shared life\, resources and her network of relationships with over 30 people over the past 10 years in the context of community living. She bears witness to God’s miraculous multiplication when we in faith offer our lives and resources to others.
