SUMMARY:Evangelicalism\, Identity\, and Culture: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Hamilton Dean’s Office: The evangelical church\, especially in North America\, has come to a serious time of self-reflection in the past few years. The clash with an increasingly secularized and polarized society is causing evangelicals to reflect deeply on their identity and how they interact with the culture. In the book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self\, Carl Trueman traces the evolution of cultural shifts from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century\, leading to an ultra-individualized and psychologized understanding of the self. We have invited Dr. Trueman to join us in considering the implications of his analysis for the evangelical identity and mission. Join us for a two-day conference with Dr. Trueman and leading evangelical authors and scholars as we explore how the church can engage with modern culture through Christ-centered apologetics and missions. \nAmong the discussions with guest and Gordon-Conwell faculty speakers\, author Collin Hansen will lead an exploration and analysis of the evangelical movement through the experiences of one of its foremost figures\, Gordon-Conwell alumnus the late-Timothy Keller\, as well as a reflection on evangelicalism in the West as part of global evangelicalism.

SUMMARY:Dean's Forum: Small Town\, Big Gospel: Ministry in Small Places
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, November 28 for the final Dean’s Forum of 2023! \nFor decades now\, evangelicals have implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) privileged and prioritized ministry in big cities and suburbs. After all\, that’s where the action is\, that’s where to go in order to make your life count\, to influence influencers\, to shape culture. The Apostle Paul focused on cities. A small church in a no-name town doesn’t have the same cachet or importance. But for those of us who long to see God’s glory spread everywhere\, throughout the world\, it’s worth asking: is the case for privileging large-place ministry compelling? Is it possible to live a fruitful and significant life devoted to small-place ministry? If so\, how ought we to go about it? Small-town pastor and Gordon-Conwell adjunct faculty\, Dr. Stephen Witmer will address these questions in the forum. \nDr. Jason McConnell\, Gordon-Conwell adjunct faculty and pastor of Franklin United Church and East Franklin Union Church\, will give a response. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required by November 20 for those who are planning to attend in person. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person. \nRegister here today!

SUMMARY:Discipleship and Mission Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary invites you to join for a Discipleship and Mission Workshop! \nWe all feel the effects of the discipleship crisis we’re in. What if you could lead your church or ministry to have a culture that produced followers of Jesus that were growing in health in all areas–character development\, relational health\, building authentic community\, learning to hear God and do what He says – not only becoming healthy themselves and growing a vibrant relationship with God but learning to multiply themselves into others (i.e.\, becoming disciple-makers). The way of Jesus is so compelling. The kind of disciples He made were disciples who made disciples who made disciples. The culture they created kept reproducing more disciples who followed Jesus with full abandon and built shared-life kinds of communities who went on mission together. \nImagine what would happen if New England was filled with missionary disciples that kept reproducing themselves? Join us November 9th for a Discipleship and Mission Workshop where we will take a deep dive into what it looks like to build a discipling culture in your context. \nRegister here today!

SUMMARY:Resilience—A One-Day Conference for Pastors
DESCRIPTION:Pastoral ministry is not for the faint of heart—conflict\, preaching multiple times a week\, incessant demands\, the care of souls\, feelings of inadequacy\, the needs of our own families—and did we mention conflict? How can a pastor stay in the game for the long haul? And not just stay in the game\, but serve with joy? Crawford Loritts tackles that question. \nFor more information and to register\, please click here. \nSponsored by Gordon-Conwell’s Haddon W. Robinson Center for Preaching

SUMMARY:Let Love Speak: Division\, Dialogue\, and the Demonization of Difference
DESCRIPTION:As a “spirit of division” permeates the church\, leaders must replace the “demonization of difference” with a spirit of love\, humility\, and unity. Come hear how pastors and specialists alike have effectively employed the “gift of dialogue” to “keep the peace” and bring healing to communities in crisis. \nGuest Speakers: \n\nRev. Joyce Scherer-Hoock (MDiv ’80) is the Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ayer\, MA. She has been an Episcopal priest for 34 years\, during which time she has had to navigate some of the most contentious issues of our day.\nBob has trained over 30\,000 professionals in communication and dialogue facilitation skills. He has been a consultant to Boston University\, Harvard Law School\, and Harvard Divinity School’s program on Religions and the Practice of Peace.\n\nThis event will take place in-person in the Alumni Hall of the Hamilton campus\, and it will stream on Facebook. \nFor more information\, click here.

SUMMARY:Justice Week at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
DESCRIPTION:We are so excited for Justice Week at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary from March 19-23!  This year\, our vision draws from Jesus’ own prayer in Matthew 6.  The person of Christ reminds us that God’s kingdom justice has taken on flesh and beckons us to live in His example as we cry: “Your will being done on earth.” Each day’s scheduling will center upon a different verse of the Lord’s Prayer\, from seeking our “daily bread” to His “kingdom come.” Our prayer is that through collective lament\, worship and service\, we would become a united presence and image of His embodied justice to the Northshore and Boston community in the here-and-now. \nThough Justice Week is only five days\, we anticipate that it will launch us into a proactive and enduring response to God’s will and heart for justice.  At the same time\, may we also be called to a heart of rest and celebration in the truth that the final work and word of justice is His. \nYou are invited to join us on our main campus in South Hamilton as we explore the power of prayer in the work of justice using the Lord’s Prayer as a framework.
