SUMMARY:Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an international initiative where Christians worldwide are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Locally\, UniteBoston coordinates evening collaborative gatherings of fellowship\, prayer and worship from January 18-25 annually. \nThis Year’s Theme: In 2025\, Christians mark the 1\,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea\, where key doctrinal disputes about the Trinity and the nature of Christ were resolved\, resulting in the Nicene Creed—a foundational statement of Christian faith and unity. The Nicene Creed is the Christian “symbol” of agreed doctrine and also the statement of faith for UniteBoston. This commemoration invites Christians to celebrate what unites them through the Creed while reflecting on the divisions that still persist today. \n \n\n\n \n\n\nClick above to watch a reflection on the significance of the Nicene Creed from Dr. Elizabeth M. Woodard\, Catholic theologian\, musician\, author\, speaker\, spiritual director\, and ecumenist. She is a member of our Christian unity cohort and considers her vocation as bringing people to God and to each other. \n \n\n\n\n\n\nMark Your Calendars – You are invited to mark your calendars and plan to attend the evening gatherings! In this time of Epiphany\, we encourage you to receive the manifestation of Jesus Christ through those of different denominations\, ethnic backgrounds and cultures. Let’s make the most of these opportunities in order to truly be the family of God and serve as the body of Christ in the world. Let’s also pray with our feet – consider how our beliefs can come together in common action and witness. \n\n\n\nSpread the Word – We also appreciate help spreading the word to people in your congregation\, family\, friends\, and neighbors. A personal invitation goes a long way. \n\n\n\nCalling to mind our common commitment to ‘love thy neighbor\,’ may the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, January 18-25\, 2025 be full of moments of conversion of heart through our encounters\, so that “all may be one.” \n\n\n\nResources for Your Week of Prayer Experience from The Initiative:\nLitany for Christian Unity \nDaily Prayer Guide \nPDF Schedule for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity  \nIntroduction on the Theme from Greymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Initiative \n\nSchedule for Gatherings in Boston & New England\nSaturday January 18 – Christian Unity Prayer Service \n11:00am to 1:00pm at Noroton Presbyterian Church\, 2011 Post Road\, Darien CT \nJoin pastoral leaders in Connecticut for liturgical prayer using the International Week of Prayer for Christian Unity worship service. \nSunday January 19 – Love Casts Out Fear: An Inauguration Eve Vigil \n5:00 to 7:00pm at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul\, 138 Tremont St. Downtown Boston\, MA 02111 or via the Cathedral’s YouTube Channel \nJoin Episcopal Bishop Julia E. SUMMARY:Creatio ex Amore and the Mission of the Church Now
DESCRIPTION:The St. Paul Center for Theology and Prayer announces an upcoming special event: \nCreatio ex Amore and the Mission of the Church Now –  An online seminar with Bishop Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm\, Moderator of the World Council of Churches. \nIn this time of climate crisis\, what difference does our faith make? How does our understanding of God\, and the meaning of God’s creating work\, ground and equip us to pray\, serve\, and act in this time? This seminar will deepen our capacity to preach and teach our claim that “God creates out of love\,” and enliven us for working with our faith communities for God’s purposes. \nRegistrants may choose to explore advance readings\, given below. They will also be invited to a follow-up conversation (on Saturday 25th January\, 9-11am ET) hosted by the Rev. Dr. Kapya Kaoma\, Rector of Christ Church\, Waltham\, author and theologian\, expanding our grounding in this topic with wisdom from African Christian theology of creation. \nThis is an online only event\, which will be hosted on Zoom. Full details\, and the link to sign up to attend\, can be found here: https://www.stpaulboston.org/bedford-strohm-event

SUMMARY:Looking for A 2BR Apartment & Local Congolese Community to Support A New Refugee Family
DESCRIPTION:Our team from the Neighborhood Church of Dorchester is accompanying a refugee family through the resettlement process with Welcome NST. The family just arrived – a mother and three sons from the Democratic Republic of Congo! \n\n\n\nWe are looking for two areas of support: \n\n\n\n1. We’re looking to connect them with the local Congolese community\, especially anyone who speaks Lingala. Language is a significant barrier\, as they speak Lingala fluently and some French too. We recognize the need and value for co-ethnics from a similar background and who may have traveled a similar journey. Having people that they can feel at home with will be particularly significant in this holiday season. \n\n\n\n2. We are looking for a 2BR unit or apartment available starting in January in the Boston/Lowell area. It must be a separate apartment or unit\, rather than a community living situation. We are praying for an alternative apartment arrangement\, rather than through a realtor. As they have entered the country under refugee status\, it will be difficult for them to meet the basic requirements to secure standard housing due to a lack of references\, credit score\, and proof of income. However they will have around $9\,500 due to a federal grant program. They have some connections in Lowell so we are prayerfully considering having Lowell be their “home base.” \n\n\nWe would appreciate if you would share this with your networks and communities. We have seen how Boston can open our hearts and hands in welcome to our global immigrants and refugees! \n\n\n\nWe look forward to hearing from you – Rev. Kelly can be reached at kelly@uniteboston.com. \n\n \nMigration is an act of courage.Migration is an act of resilience.Migration is an act of bravery.Migration is an act of love.Nothing less.Art by @radicistudios

SUMMARY:Jesus: Savior\, Healer\, Friend
DESCRIPTION:Join women from Boston and New England at our 3rd collaborative conference. Jesus: Savior\, Healer\, Friend is an event that will focus squarely on the person of Jesus. As Savior\, Jesus died on the cross so that we would be reconciled to God and live a life of abundance in this world. He also knew that this world is temporary and that there is another one that we can look forward to where there is no suffering or pain. As our Healer\, Jesus restores the broken places in our souls\, the traumas\, and the deep wounds we’ve experienced. By his stripes we are healed\, the Bible says. As our Friend\, Jesus promises to never leave us or forsake us. In Him\, we have his guarantee that we will never be alone through the ups and downs of life. \nIf you’ve never experienced life lived for Jesus\, we especially invite you to join us. You will not be disappointed. \nCome and let’s experience together everything that Jesus is and promises to us. \nRegister Here.

SUMMARY:Race & Faith Cohort: Learning Communities for White Evangelicals
DESCRIPTION:Cohorts are communities where white Christians can learn about racism from a biblical perspective and develop the capacity to respond to it as an outworking of their faith. They are six-month commitments through which participants examine and respond to the ways racism impacts ourselves\, our society\, our Christian communities\, and faith. They are run in a seminar-style format for small groups of 6-8 people and utilize various methods\, including engaging books and media\, guest speakers\, discussion\, spiritual disciplines\, creative exercises and field trips. Cohorts value experiential and peer learning and aim to get beyond an intellectual understanding of race by engaging the whole person in mind\, body\, emotions\, and spirit. At the end of each cohort\, participants go through an individual and communal discernment process regarding how they can take actions to contribute to the dismantling of racism in their sphere of influence. \nClick here for more information. Applications are due December 1!

SUMMARY:BOSTON REPARATIONS AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE FAITH COMMUNITY
DESCRIPTION:*New time and location* \nJoin us as we dive deeper into the path toward reparations for Black Boston and the faith community’s role in this important journey. Since The New Democracy Coalition’s 2018 call for reparations\, efforts have led to a historic apology in 2022 by Boston City Council and Mayor Wu for the city’s role in the slave trade. This apology initiated the creation of the Boston Reparations Task Force in 2023. \nOur next step is establishing a community-led Boston Reparations Commission comprised of activists\, clergy\, and residents committed to justice and reparative action. This commission will serve to educate\, inform\, and mobilize Bostonians on the issue of reparations. \nDate: Saturday\, November 23\, 2024\nTime: 1:00 PM\nLocation: Codman Square Public Library\, 690 Washington Street\, Dorchester \nFeatured Panelists: \n\nRev. Carrington Moore\, Executive Director of Common Cathedral\nDanielle Jones Williams\, Director of Prophetic Resistance Boston\nRev. Dr. Savina Martin\, Public Theologian with the Poor People’s Campaign Mass\nRev. Valerie Kim Copeland\, Pastor of Neighborhood Church of Dorchester\n\nAll are invited to join us for this month’s meeting—a chance to learn\, discuss\, and contribute to meaningful change. \nMore info here.
