SUMMARY:I Never Saw Another Butterfly/The Terezin Promise
DESCRIPTION:Lexington Christian Academy’s middle school play is an evening of one-acts about the Terezin concentration camp during World War II\, written by Celeste Raspanti. \nRaspanti has extracted a beautiful and moving one-act play based on the poetry created in a concentration camp by the Jewish children of Prague. Over 15\,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin\, and only about 100 were alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of the war. One of the survivors\, Raja\, having lived through it all at Terezin tells the true story of the children\, and their teacher\, Irena\, who helped to give them hope when there was little enough reason to hope\, by creating a little world of laughter\, of flowers and butterflies behind the barbed wire. \n\nGet your tickets → HERE!\nFor more information about the play\, including a content advisory\, click here.

SUMMARY:Legacy of Slavery at Harvard University tour
DESCRIPTION:“If you abide in my word\, you are truly my disciples\, and you will know the truth\, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32) \n\n\n\n\n“VERITAS” – Harvard’s motto “Truth” inscribed on gates\, doorways\, and sculptures all over campus \n\n\n\nJoin UniteBoston’s Sankofa cohort for Legacy of Slavery at Harvard University tour\, which uncovers the truth of Harvard University’s entanglements with the institution of slavery through a 10-stop tour. The stops on the tour provide an opportunity to learn about a part of Harvard’s history that has long been hidden in plain sight. In addition\, the tour elevates stories of Black women and men whose resistance and leadership have shaped the University—and our nation. \n\n\n\nThe tour will be led by Rev. Rita Powell\, director of the Episcopal Chaplaincy at Harvard University. We will take special note of the way Christian congregations and churches have contributed or resisted the institution of slavery\, and the repair work that is taking place today. The tour will go from 2:30pm – 4:30pm at the Harvard-Episcopal chaplaincy building\, 1A Garden Street\, Cambridge MA 02138\, and will conclude with a time of refreshments from 4:30 to 5:00pm in the same location. \nFrom Megan Lietz\, director of the Race & Christian Community Initiative and Sankofa group member: “Boston is known for its world-class colleges and universities. But many of these institutions were built on the backs of enslaved people. Take the time to better understand how our city’s academic success has been shaped by the institution of slavery through a history of slavery at Harvard tour.” \n\nClick Here to Register\n\nP.S. If you’re not able to make it on this date and time\, the tour can also be experienced online here and there are many other resources regarding Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery \n\n\n\nP.P.S. Curious what the tour is like? Dr. Michael James\, a previous UniteBoston cohort member\, has written a blog sharing his experience in the walking tour about how it nurtured love and a shared humanity. \n

SUMMARY:Sound the Trumpet Preaching Session
DESCRIPTION:The Sound the Trumpet in Zion Preaching Conference on October 3-4\, 2024 was an overwhelming success!  Unashamedly Black\, unapologetically Christian\, and unabashedly inclusive\, Christians from across New England gathered for two days of worship and workshops to sharpen their craft\, grounded in Black church traditions. \nAll preachers and church leaders are invited to an additional Preaching Session with Rev. Dr. Martha Simons on Tuesday November 5 at 6:30pm EST. You MUST register at the zoom link.  \nDr. Martha Simmons will lead a conversation on “Doing the Deed: Preaching for the Present Age.” As we face several obstacles and opportunities\, my prayer is that we will be able to communicate a message of light in darkness.

SUMMARY:Accompanying New Arrivals: Solidarity & Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:Since family shelter stopped being guaranteed in MA in August\, volunteers have had a fast-paced and heartbreaking few months supporting unhoused families at the train stations and welcome centers. Others have been working to open the doors of their congregations or personal homes to provide shelter and keep families off the streets. Over the past three months we have witnessed how state systems are deeply failing our newest neighbors. On Oct 22 from 7-8:30 pm\, we will offer a training for volunteers to come together to learn\, understand the basic principles of accompaniment and solidarity\, and discuss how to take care of ourselves in the face of systemic injustice so that we can stay engaged in this work. If you are new to volunteering\, we will include some concrete steps on how to get more involved! Workshop developed by Boston Immigrant Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN)\, Episcopal City Mission\, and MA Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. \nClick HERE to Register.

SUMMARY:The Pursuit
DESCRIPTION:The Pursuit is a once a month city-wide collegiate gathering at Tremont Temple Baptist Church where we are challenged to live wholeheartedly for God’s mission. We’ll serve dinner at 6:30 and start our session at 7:15. We bring in leaders  from across the city to pour into the gathering. Our prayer is that this will help call out the next generation to consider living missionally on their campus and across the world. As Boston welcomes the nations\, we pray that we might become a major sending city back to the nations.
