SUMMARY:Emergency Food Pantries and Clothing Stores
DESCRIPTION:Dear New England Clergy and Non Profits: \nGlobal Exchange New England Divine Health and Healing Center is one a missionary program of Global Exchange Christian Church. The Spirit of God encouraged GECU to introduce this program to churches in Cambridge\, Somerville\, and the Greater Boston area. The Emergency Food Pantries and Clothing stores was first announced at the Cambridge Clergy breakfast in the Mayor’s office on the second Wednesday at our 10:30 A. M. meeting on November 14\, 2018. After being informed that a feminine was coming\, the Food Program was launched on November 28\, 2018. At the time of this meeting we had no idea that the famine was right around the corner. \nGlobal Exchange is requested that every church in New England consider having a food pantry and clothing store in your church facility. Our staff is standing willing and ready to assist in helping the Faith Community set in place a food pantry and clothing store. If each church ask their congregants to bring a non perishable food item every time they attend church service\, it shall not be a problem to have enough food to distribute. Please ask that families purchase Organic non perishable foods as much as possible. The purchase of organic foods will help to cut down on the cancer causing agents and inflammation that is brought about in some foods. If the cans are bent\, please do not distribute those can goods. GECU has a Grant For You That will help set up your food pantry and clothing store. GECU is already taking steps to make this a national event even after the Government Shutdown is over.  For more information please call (617)494-0938 Monday through Friday 1:00 – 5:00 P. M. (Saturdays by appointment) or email gechristianchurch@gmail.com. \nGod Bless You\, \nPastor Diane Hopson\, Senior Pastor \n  \n

SUMMARY:Veritas Forum - Religion and Medicine: Should they Mix?
DESCRIPTION:Religion and Medicine: Should they Mix?: When are discussions of religion and spirituality appropriate in medicine? \nThere are many reasons for strong concern about physicians/healthcare providers bringing their religious beliefs into clinical practice and especially if they discuss religion with their patients. The power dynamic between physicians and patients can lead to many unintended consequences. One’s religious beliefs might bias them to make decisions that are not clinically advisable. What if the physician is of a different faith background than the patient? In addition\, some might say most physicians aren’t trained to talk about these issues\, so they should leave them to hospital chaplains. Lastly\, there is the issue of time: Clinicians have too much to do\, so why add one more thing to their plate? \nOn the other hand\, many would acknowledge that religion/spirituality form an integral part of the lives of many patients with profound implications on their health. A growing number of empirical studies suggest a relationship between religion and its impact on health and patient care. Clinicians take social/sexual histories while often holding different social backgrounds/practices than their patients\, and this standard clinical practice has enormous value despite many of the same concerns present as those above. Why not include a spiritual history? \nThis year’s Veritas Forum at Harvard Medical School will be a dialogue between 4 speakers with differing views on the issue. Come with an open mind and any questions you might have! \nReligion and Medicine: Should they Mix?:  When are discussions of religion and spirituality appropriate in medicine? \nDate: Friday\, Jan. 18\, 2019 / 6:30-8:30 pm \n(Note: Dinner discussions immediately following the event will occur in rooms in the same building from 9-10pm)\n \nLocation: TMEC Amphitheater (260 Longwood Ave.\, Boston\, MA 02115) \nClick here to RSVP for the event  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2755013408056193/ \nRSVP for dinner discussions immediately following the event:  https://goo.gl/forms/7fm9lmE7Kv3nb9Pq1 \nSpeakers: \n \nTia Powell\, MD\, Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Director of Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics (prior Executive Director of New York State’s bioethics commission). \nTyler VanderWeele\, PhD\, Harvard School of Public Health: Professor of Epidemiology (recipient of the 2017 COPSS Presidents’ Award\, the “Nobel prize/Field’s Medal of statistics) \nLydia Dugdale\, MD\, Yale School of Medicine: Associate Director of the Program for Biomedical Ethics (editor of “Dying in the Twenty-first Century: Toward a New Ethical Framework for the Art of Dying Well) \nRichard Sloan\, PhD\, Columbia University Medical Center: Professor of Behavioral Medicine/Psychiatry (author of “Blind Faith: The Unholy Alliance of Religion and Medicine”) \nModerator: \nHoward Koh\, MD\, Harvard School of Public Health: Professor of the Practice of Public Health Leadership (former US Assistant Secretary for Health nominated by President Barak Obama) \nSponsored by:  Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics\, the Initiative on Health\, Religion\, and Spirituality at Harvard Medical School\, the Thomistic Institute

SUMMARY:Symposium: Traditional Biblical Sexuality in a Changing Youth Culture
DESCRIPTION:As debates about human sexuality dominate classrooms\, coffee shops\, and social media\, youth ministers committed to a traditional Biblical ethic may struggle to find their voice. Some may wonder if there is a safe space in which to form a theologically informed and nuanced approach to these charged and complex issues. \nJoin Dr. Walt Mueller of the Center for Parent Youth Understanding and Dr. Duffy Robbins of Grove City College for an intensive multi-day symposium to deepen your own Biblical and theological foundations\, to broaden your apologetic for affirming the goodness of expressing sexual intimacy within the bonds of marriage between a man and a woman\, and to strengthen your pastoral skills in helping youth live out these truths. \nThis Symposium presumes participants’ affirmation of a historic\, orthodox Christian sexual ethic and will be building from this premise\, not debating it. Participation is limited to 25 to allow for deep exploration of these issues and will require some preparatory work and active involvement in the Symposium.

We do this throughout the year but on CHRISTMAS EVE we make it a special point to go into clubs across the state of Mass. \nWe are looking for people who are willing to go into strip clubs on Christmas eve and bring already\, made up Christmas baskets to the women working there that day. We have mandatory training. We go as teams\, no one goes alone. \nThis is just the basics but for more details email us at: bgatchell@egc.org           \nhttp://www.lovedbyrouteone.org

SUMMARY:Seeking Host Churches for Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Services
DESCRIPTION:Dear Pastors and Leaders\, \n\n\n\nFor the past two years\, the Institute for Christian Unity and UniteBoston have partnered together to host Week of Prayer for Christian Unity gatherings. In 2017\, there were nightly liturgically-oriented prayer and worship gatherings with churches from a variety of ethnicities\, traditions\, and geography. We also hosted a large worship service on January 21st in alignment with the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation\, that had over 8 co-sponsors and was attended by over 800 people. In 2018\, we focused on fellowship across our congregations\, and hosted 7 dinners in different neighborhoods in alignment with the launch of UniteBoston’s neighborhood dinner initiative. \n\n\nIn 2019\, the theme is “Justice\, Only Justice\, You Shall Pursue\,” (Deuteronomy 16:20). This year’s prayer service includes reflection on the recurring situations that bring divisions and conflicts and our calling as members of the body of Christ to pursue and embody justice. \n\n\nUniteBoston is currently seeking interest among a variety of local pastors for hosting a prayer service during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18 to 25\, 2019).  The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity includes a wide variety of churches from very different traditions\, polity and theology\, and while it can be challenging to come together\, this is a crucial time to witness to the reconciling peace and justice found in our Christian faith. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information about this year’s theme and expectations for hosting.  Please email Kelly Fassett (kelly@uniteboston.com) if you’re interested in hosting one of the services by December 5th. This will allow us time to consider all the night-to-night prayer and worship gatherings and neighborhood dinners and finalize the schedule. Thanks so much for your commitment to Christian unity in Boston!
