SUMMARY:Welcoming Joy Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join women from Boston and New England at our 2nd collaborative conference! Welcoming Joy: Acknowledging Suffering\, Holding Fast to Hope\, is our Christian response to the reality of pain and suffering in our lives\, our city\, and in the world. As women\, we experience emotional\, psychological\, and physical pain such as the loss of a relationship\, the death of a loved one\, chronic pain\, and even depression. We also may watch helplessly as others suffer extreme loss in their life. Yet\, our faith asks that we remain hopeful in the midst of affliction. “Count it all joy\, my {sisters} when you meet trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces patience”. (James 1:2). But how do we count it joy when our heart is in despair? That is just one of the many questions we will consider at this conference. \nJesus’ life provides a model for joy and hope. In Hebrews 12:2b it says For the joy set before him\, he endured the cross\, scorning its shame\, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. \nRegister here today\, and join this conversation on Joy: how to welcome\, embrace\, and persevere in it!

SUMMARY:Nourish Our Neighbors Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Nourish Our Neighbors is an initiative to help our neighbors struggling with food insecurity access culturally-relevant\, healthy\, and fresh foods\, during the holidays and beyond! \nWorking toward food justice means seeing food access as more than just taking in calories or being close to a grocery store. With food justice\, people have access to fresh\, healthy\, affordable\, culturally-relevant foods that they actually want to eat. Ensuring this access during periods of food insecurity is an important part of building an equitable\, just\, and resilient food system in the City of Boston. We collaborate with partners across the City to meet the diverse food needs of our residents – and you can help! \n\nTo learn more\, visit our website or fill out this form if you would like someone to help connect you!

SUMMARY:UniteBoston Fundraising Party at PKL
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date and join us for UniteBoston’s Fundraising Party at PKL on January 14! \nStart off 2024 with some fun with the UniteBoston community. This year’s fundraiser will be at PKL\, a venue in South Boston where we will have the lounge area to hang out\, play cornhole and shuffleboard\, eat great food\, and hear about what is coming next for UB. Kids are welcome too! \nOur goal is to raise $15\,000 by January 14\, 2023 to support the allocation of resources to refine our strategic planning process\, explore available resources related to barriers to unity\, evaluate gaps\, and collaborate with local partners. Plus\, for this year’s fundraiser\, UB is providing a matching grant up to $5\,000 for the Race & Christian Community Initiative’s experiential learning weekend on the history of slavery in Boston. That means your impact will be doubled by supporting two organizations\, rather than just one! Click here to read more in our attached letter and you can make a donation here! \nPKL is a 10-minute walk from Andrew or Broadway Stations on the Red Line. Ample street parking is available on Old Colony Avenue or there is a parking lot at 323 Dorchester Ave\, South Boston MA 02127\, a 5-minute walk from the venue. \nRSVP to come to the party through Evite here. SUMMARY:2024 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an international initiative where Christians worldwide are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Locally\, UniteBoston coordinates evening collaborative gatherings of fellowship\, prayer and worship from January 18-25 annually.\n\nThis year’s theme\, liturgies\, and prayer guides were developed together by Christian churches from Burkina Faso in western Africa. This year’s theme is based on the text from the Gospel of St Luke: “You shall love the Lord your God … and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). In response to the question of who is my neighbor\, Jesus responds with a parable illustrating love extending far beyond the limits expected by the lawyer. It is not shared identities that should prompt us to come to the aid of the other\, but love of our ‘neighbor.’ Here in Boston\, it may be common to relate to one another like Samaritans and Jews\, divided culturally and theologically and living with unfriendly or hostile relationships. However\, Jesus points us to a different way: to engage with those on the “other side” and even understand the situations of one another so intricately that we can ‘pour oil or wine’ on one another’s wounds. Our times of insecurity and fear confront us with a reality where distrust and uncertainty come to the forefront of relationships. This is the challenge of the parable today: to whom am I a neighbour? \nMark Your Calendars – You are invited to mark your calendars and plan to attend the evening gatherings! In this time of Epiphany\, we encourage you to receive the manifestation of Jesus Christ through those of different denominations\, races and cultures. Let’s make the most of these opportunities in order to truly be the family of God and serve as the body of Christ in the world. Let’s also pray with our feet – express love to our neighbors as an act of prayer. \nCommunity Dinner Template – You can use this template for conversation and prayer along this theme with your church or community group! \nSpread the Word – We also appreciate help spreading the word to people in your congregation\, family\, friends\, and neighbors. A personal invitation goes a long way. Calling to mind our common commitment to ‘love thy neighbor\,’ may the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, January 18-25\, 2024 be full of moments of conversion of heart through our encounters\, so that “all may be one.” God of welcome\, grant us the grace to risk embracing the stranger\, tending their wounds and standing in solidarity with them. Strengthen our resolve to be kind and merciful and to act towards our sisters and brothers at all times as you do towards us. Lord Jesus\, who prayed that all might be one\, we pray to you for the unity of all Christians\, according to your will\, according to your means. May your Spirit enable us to experience the suffering caused by division\, to see our sin and to hope beyond all hope. Amen. \nSchedule \n\n\n\nLoving Our Unhoused Neighbors: HOME Thursday Night Outreach Thursday January 18\, 5:45 to 7:15pm with optional prep time beforehand and debrief afterwards | Park Street Church\, 1 Park Street\, Downtown Boston \n\n\n\n  Join to serve with Park Street Church’s HOME ministry\, where they welcome 60-100+ unhoused neighbors and other neighbors in need to fellowship meals hosted on Thursday evenings from 5:45-7:15pm and Saturday mornings from 8:30-11am. SUMMARY:Evangelicalism\, Identity\, and Culture: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Hamilton Dean’s Office: The evangelical church\, especially in North America\, has come to a serious time of self-reflection in the past few years. The clash with an increasingly secularized and polarized society is causing evangelicals to reflect deeply on their identity and how they interact with the culture. In the book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self\, Carl Trueman traces the evolution of cultural shifts from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century\, leading to an ultra-individualized and psychologized understanding of the self. We have invited Dr. Trueman to join us in considering the implications of his analysis for the evangelical identity and mission. Join us for a two-day conference with Dr. Trueman and leading evangelical authors and scholars as we explore how the church can engage with modern culture through Christ-centered apologetics and missions. \nAmong the discussions with guest and Gordon-Conwell faculty speakers\, author Collin Hansen will lead an exploration and analysis of the evangelical movement through the experiences of one of its foremost figures\, Gordon-Conwell alumnus the late-Timothy Keller\, as well as a reflection on evangelicalism in the West as part of global evangelicalism.
