SUMMARY:Religious Leadership & Public Repair: A Conversation with Rob Schenck and Abigail Disney
DESCRIPTION:Join Hebrew College for “Religious Leadership & Public Repair”: A conversation with Rev. Rob Schenck\, an ordained evangelical minister and a progressive voice of dissent in his religious community and Abigail E. Disney\, Filmmaker/Philanthropist/Activist. \nThe conversation\, moderated by Rabbi Or Rose\, Director of Hebrew College’s Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership\, will include clips from Disney’s award-winning documentary\, The Armor of Light\, to explore Schenck’s evolution as a minister\, his relationship with Disney\, and their reflections on the need to forge relationships across divides. This will include discussion of lessons learned\, current projects\, and future possibilities. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \nAbout the Film \nThe film captures Schenck’s journey of conscience\, as he began to question the consistency of the pro-gun and pro-life stances of the far-right evangelical movement that he represented at the time. This would eventually lead to Schenck’s break from evangelical orthodoxy on guns\, abortion\, and the public display of religious symbols. \nOur Speakers: \nReverend Dr. Rob Schenck spent nearly four decades as a controversial far-right national figure. The once prominent anti-abortion activist has since repudiated his radical conservative positions and has dedicated himself to promoting racial justice\, reducing gun violence\, and fostering religious inclusion. He is serving as a Hebrew College Visiting Faculty member for the 2023-2024 academic year\, working closely with the College’s Miller Center for Interreligious Leadership & Learning. \nAbigail E. Disney advocates for real changes to the way capitalism operates in today’s world. As a philanthropist and social activist\, she has worked with organizations supporting peacebuilding\, gender justice\, and systemic cultural change. She is a documentary filmmaker who won an Emmy for her film\, The Armor of Light. Her latest film\, The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales\, which she co-directed with Kathleen Hughes\, made its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The film screened in select theaters and is available on demand. In Season 4 of the podcast All Ears\, Abigail uses the film as a jumping-off point to ask big-thinking business leaders\, union organizers\, economists\, and others how they would fix our broken economy. \nRabbi Or Rose is the founding Director of the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership of Hebrew College. Before assuming this position in 2016\, he worked in various administrative and teaching capacities at Hebrew College for over a decade\, including serving as a founding faculty member and Associate Dean of the Rabbinical School. Rabbi Rose was also one of the creators of CIRCLE\, The Center for Interreligious & Community Leadership Education\, cosponsored by Hebrew College and Andover Newton Theological School (2007-2017). \nEmail us with any questions\, and register here today!

SUMMARY:Discipleship and Mission Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary invites you to join for a Discipleship and Mission Workshop! \nWe all feel the effects of the discipleship crisis we’re in. What if you could lead your church or ministry to have a culture that produced followers of Jesus that were growing in health in all areas–character development\, relational health\, building authentic community\, learning to hear God and do what He says – not only becoming healthy themselves and growing a vibrant relationship with God but learning to multiply themselves into others (i.e.\, becoming disciple-makers). The way of Jesus is so compelling. The kind of disciples He made were disciples who made disciples who made disciples. The culture they created kept reproducing more disciples who followed Jesus with full abandon and built shared-life kinds of communities who went on mission together. \nImagine what would happen if New England was filled with missionary disciples that kept reproducing themselves? Join us November 9th for a Discipleship and Mission Workshop where we will take a deep dive into what it looks like to build a discipling culture in your context. \nRegister here today!

SUMMARY:Boston Flourish 2023
DESCRIPTION:WHAT:  Gather with the dreamers and doers of our city to activate and partner towards a Boston where everyone flourishes. \nAt this gathering\, we will celebrate the many ways that God has been and is presently at work in the city and further this work by connecting together to strategically address issues facing Boston residents. \nThis year\, our key impact areas are human trafficking\, youth mental health\, and migrant care. Key organizations addressing these areas will present the current state of these realities\, the progress that is being made\, and how individuals can come alongside their efforts to see tangible change.  While it is only a one-day gathering\, it will generate working teams\, prototypes\, and collaborative potential for transforming our city\, a holistic movement that can be built on for years to come. \nWHY: Jeremiah 29:7 speaks of the need to seek the welfare and holistic flourishing of the city. Our city thrives when faith\, business\, and civic partners collaboratively address local issues rather than work on their own. Our goal is to see Boston Flourish – and we know that this is only possible if we work together. \nWHO: Business\, non-profit\, church\, and city leaders are all invited to take part in this gathering. This gathering is founded on Christian / holistic gospel values\, and we invite anyone who wants to join us in seeking the flourishing of the city. \nPlease join us and help to spread the word! \nFor more information\, visit www.bostonflourish.com. \nClick here to register for the conference \nClick here for sponsor letter & form

SUMMARY:Dean's Forum: Small Town\, Big Gospel: Ministry in Small Places
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, November 28 for the final Dean’s Forum of 2023! \nFor decades now\, evangelicals have implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) privileged and prioritized ministry in big cities and suburbs. After all\, that’s where the action is\, that’s where to go in order to make your life count\, to influence influencers\, to shape culture. The Apostle Paul focused on cities. A small church in a no-name town doesn’t have the same cachet or importance. But for those of us who long to see God’s glory spread everywhere\, throughout the world\, it’s worth asking: is the case for privileging large-place ministry compelling? Is it possible to live a fruitful and significant life devoted to small-place ministry? If so\, how ought we to go about it? Small-town pastor and Gordon-Conwell adjunct faculty\, Dr. Stephen Witmer will address these questions in the forum. \nDr. Jason McConnell\, Gordon-Conwell adjunct faculty and pastor of Franklin United Church and East Franklin Union Church\, will give a response. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required by November 20 for those who are planning to attend in person. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person. \nRegister here today!

SUMMARY:Welcoming Joy Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join women from Boston and New England at our 2nd collaborative conference! Welcoming Joy: Acknowledging Suffering\, Holding Fast to Hope\, is our Christian response to the reality of pain and suffering in our lives\, our city\, and in the world. As women\, we experience emotional\, psychological\, and physical pain such as the loss of a relationship\, the death of a loved one\, chronic pain\, and even depression. We also may watch helplessly as others suffer extreme loss in their life. Yet\, our faith asks that we remain hopeful in the midst of affliction. “Count it all joy\, my {sisters} when you meet trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces patience”. (James 1:2). But how do we count it joy when our heart is in despair? That is just one of the many questions we will consider at this conference. \nJesus’ life provides a model for joy and hope. In Hebrews 12:2b it says For the joy set before him\, he endured the cross\, scorning its shame\, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. \nRegister here today\, and join this conversation on Joy: how to welcome\, embrace\, and persevere in it!
