SUMMARY:Reading Augustine in a Time of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with three interpreters of St. Augustine as they engage the questions posed by the multiple challenges of 2020. How can Augustine’s pastoral response to the sack of Rome speak to the fear and anxiety from the global pandemic? What political idolatry of today might Augustine diagnose? How might Augustine’s understanding of “exile” connect to the experiences of minority communities in the United States? How can Augustine’s thought be a bridge between different Christian traditions? \nPanelists:\n-James K.A. Smith is professor of philosophy at Calvin University and author of On the Road with Saint Augustine: A Real-world Spirituality for Restless Hearts.\n-Joseph Kelley is professor of religious and theological studies at Merrimack College and the editor of City of God: Abridged Edition.\n-Gregory Lee is Associate Professor of Theology and Urban Studies at Wheaton College\, Senior Fellow of The KellyWheaton Center for Early Christian Studies and theologian in residence at Lawndale Christian Community Church in Chicago. \n* Note that UniteBoston is a sponsoring organization for this event\, and UniteBoston’s Executive Director Kelly Fassett is one of the panelists who will be responding to the session * \nTo register\, click here. \nPDF Flyer

SUMMARY:Being Prepared In the Time of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nI pray that my email finds you\, your family and your congregations well. \nMinistry in the midst of COVID-19 has been challenging. We can’t control how this pandemic pans out\, but we can control who speaks for us if we’re unable to speak for ourselves and we can make sure they know what matters most to us. “Being Prepared in the Time of COVID-19” is led by Bethel’s Planning Ahead ministry and will equip you to help your congregants prepare for these critical conversations during this difficult time. \nWe are pleased to offer a $200 honorarium to the first 15 churches that register their pastor and at least 3 additional ministers or congregants to attend. \n\nThe pastor and the 3 ministers or congregants MUST ATTEND the event on either of 2 available dates.\n\n\nThe available dates are Saturday\, November 21\, 2pm-4pm; OR Saturday\, December 5\, 10am-12pm.\n\n\nEveryone on your team does not need to attend the session on the same date. Individual participants can attend whichever date is most convenient for them. For example\, you might choose to attend the November session\, while the other 3 members of your team might prefer the December date.\nHowever\, ALL 4 team participants MUST ATTEND one of the two sessions in order for your church to receive the $200 honorarium.\n\nOver the past five years\, Planning Ahead has prepared more than 200 members to talk about what matters most to them. If you get a chance to read the featured articles\, you’ll see how much of a gift these conversations have been to our congregation\, and to Ray and me as their pastors. We would like to support you to provide a similar ministry for your members. In January and February 2021\, we will offer additional training for interested congregations. Seed funding will be available. \nPlease feel free to forward this information to other colleagues. I hope I’ll see you at one of our sessions. Thank you for your consideration. \nRegister for the December 5 session here. \nSincerely\, \nGloria White-Hammond

SUMMARY:Ministry Opportunity Over the Holidays
DESCRIPTION:MANNA (Many Angels Needed Now and Always) is a ministry of and with the homeless community in downtown Boston. Through MANNA\, we seek not only to welcome folks across differences of class\, wealth\, culture\, race and mental ability\, but also to empower all people to claim their place as essential members of our community. \nAll through this pandemic\, the MANNA team at the cathedral has been providing respite\, bathroom use\, water and food\, and supportive community for unhoused neighbors on and around Boston Common. Many of the facilities and sources of nourishment normally available have been closed or unavailable elsewhere. This ministry has expanded to meet the growing need\, as evictions and other crises are expanding the ranks of the homeless. \nSeveral of our MANNA staff members are graduate students and will be taking time off over the month ahead to travel home. In order to continue to meet the need at hand\, we will need a handful of volunteers. Please share with people who are healthy\, not in high-risk categories\, and open to the opportunity of in-person service the invitation to this work. \n* MANNA operates Sundays\, Mondays\, and Tuesdays out of the cathedral\, which is on Boston Common\, across from the Park St. T-stop. We would be glad for people who can serve one\, two\, or three days\, on a regular basis\, through late January. \n* Volunteers will join the staff in offering services following careful protocols and using PPE in order to maximize safety and health. We have a strong track record in this area. \n* Tasks include greeting people on the front porch and making sure everyone entering is masked (giving out masks as needed)\, serving pre-packaged meals and cups of coffee\, offering a listening ear to someone who needs one\, watching for pastoral and mental health needs and referring those to our trained staff\, and wiping down chairs and tables between users. \n* Helpful volunteers will be willing too serve in an environment with daily changes and challenges\, and able to jump in and serve others without needing a lot of attention or pastoral support on site themselves. \nPlease ask anyone who may be called to this ministry to contact the Rev. Jennifer McCracken at jmccracken@diomass.org. Jennifer will share more details and mutually discern whether to move forward. \nMany thanks for reading this (!)\, for the great work all of you are doing to support those in need at this time\, and for your partnership in this challenging season. \nClick here to learn more about MANNA.

SUMMARY:UB's "Be the Bridge for Boston" Spring Groups
DESCRIPTION:At UniteBoston\, we recognize the need to address the sin of racism and the pervasive inequities that persist in our city and nation. We recognize that justice is not peripheral\, but intrinsic to the gospel\, and Christians should be leading the way in the movement towards racial justice today.  \nLast fall\, UniteBoston launched a “Be the Bridge” Zoom group\, where 28 people engaged in weekly conversation with Latasha Morrison’s “Be the Bridge” curriculum. We have heard that there are at least 9 other Boston-area churches that have utilized racial justice curriculum\, and this spring\, we are seeking to build on this momentum together across churches. The goal for this spring is to help people understand various initiatives that are happening in Greater Boston towards systemic racial justice and to nurture friendships across churches for accountability and support in actively working towards reconciliation\, equity\, and justice in our day-to-day lives. \nWe will be hosting a bimonthly speaker series from February to June with locally-focused resources and speakers who are working in a particular aspect of justice (education\, housing\, incarceration/police reform\, economics) to share with the group. Each session will include a 20-minute presentation\, followed by Q & A\, practical action steps\, and prayer. This speaker series is open to the public for anyone to join (1 hour total) \nFollowing the speaker\, there will be small groups that will meet for 30 minutes with people who have committed to attending the four speaker series talks and meeting at least one other time per month for support and accountability in living out God’s call for racial justice in our day-to-day lives. \nGroup size is approximately 8-10 people with intentional diversity given to age\, race\, gender\, denomination\, etc. We may form themed groups based on different communities where individuals are seeking to implement racial justice (workplace\, church\, family/friends\, school\, neighborhood) \nThe “Be the Bridge for Boston” groups are open to anyone who has done significant introductory racial justice learning/work with Be the Bridge or another program. If you are looking for more of an introductory learning group on racial justice\, email Rev. Kelly (kelly@uniteboston.com) to find out about other introductory groups that are taking place. \nWe are also looking for small group leaders who have experience leading these types of spaces. This is an opportunity to join a team of leaders across churches who are working towards racial justice. You can indicate your interest in this opportunity in the sign-up form. \n \n  We are currently recruiting for participants to join\, as well as a diverse team of leaders for the groups. \nClick here for a PDF summary of the “Be the Bridge for Boston” groups \nClick here to sign up! The last day to sign up is Friday January 29th.
