SUMMARY:Academic Mentors Recruitment
DESCRIPTION:The Boston Education Collaborative at Emmanuel Gospel Center is recruiting another round of volunteers to help schools and afterschool programs this school year. If people thought last school year was challenging\, this school year has been even more difficult for schools and programs. A recurring theme is the fatigue of staff and parents and the loss/regression of social emotional skills of students. \n\n\nWhat if the Church steps into this need and opportunity to bring Christ’s love and comfort to these school communities and programs? Our volunteers provide a source of encouragement to the staff and students in addition to academic mentoring help. And the impact goes both ways. While volunteers seek to be helpful\, they also experience change in themselves.\n\nMinimum requirement to volunteer is 1-2 hours/week. There are several in-person volunteer requests\, but there are also some remote opportunities. See tiny.cc/BECtutors for more information. We could use volunteers to help in Boston\, Cambridge\, Chelsea and Brockton.\n\n\n\nPlease contact Ruth Wong\, rwong[at]egc.org\, for more information. If your church would like to be involved in mobilizing volunteers\, we would love to speak with you.

SUMMARY:RCCI Cohort Communities for White Evangelicals
DESCRIPTION:Cohorts are communities where Christians can learn about racism from a biblical perspective and develop the capacity to respond to it as an outworking of their faith. Our current cohorts are designed for White leaders shaped by the evangelical tradition\, and aim to create a space where they can come together to learn and do the self-work needed to engage issues related to race more effectively. RCCI understands leadership broadly and welcomes formal and informal leadership alike.  \nCohorts are six-month commitments through which people examine and respond to the ways racism impacts ourselves\, our society\, our Christian communities\, and faith. They are run in a seminar-style format for small groups of 6-8 people and utilize various methods\, including engaging books and media\, guest speakers\, discussion\, spiritual disciplines\, creative exercises\, and field trips. Cohorts value experiential and peer learning and aim to get beyond an intellectual understanding of race by engaging the whole person in mind\, body\, emotions\, and spirit. \nAt the end of each cohort\, participants go through an individual and communal discernment process regarding how they can take actions to contribute to the dismantling of racism in their sphere of influence. All alumni are also invited into RCCI’s support and accountability groups to receive ongoing resources to move from knowing and caring to action. \nClick here for more information.  \nClick here to apply by March 11 for our spring cohort!

SUMMARY:Spiritual Direction Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn the life-giving craft of spiritual direction through a two year intensive training cohort. \nTime & Location\n\n\nSep 10\, 2022\, 11:30 PM – May 09\, 2023\, 8:30 PM (year one) \nOnline and In-Person\, Boston \n\n\n\nAbout\n\n\n\nThis spiritual direction modality of ministry is the art and craft of skilled sojourning.  Spiritual direction finds itself in a unique place among helping professions.  It is richly rooted in the history of the church\, steeped in contemplative tradition\, and was in its pre-modern time\, the quintessential discipline for attending to matters of the interior life.  Modernity replaced this practice with the field of psychology.  While in some ways\, psychological research\, Freud and beyond\, served the modality of spiritual direction well\, the contemporary discipline of psychology has provided an ill equipped substitute for the spiritually discerning\, attuned accompaniment of spiritual direction.  This course seeks to harness both\, the richness of the tradition of spiritual direction as well as the contributions of object relations psychology and even more recently\, interpersonal neurobiology.  For this reason\, the content spans the spectrum of graduate level and popular level reading\, personal prayer and reflection assignments\, as well as rigorous clinical practicum (second year). \nWhat makes this program distinct from other offerings is its over indexing in cross-disciplinary study and an overview approach to other relevant (but less relevant) topics.  Our points of focus are curated to ministry with Christian professionals living and working in a post Christian context.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Jubilee Observance
DESCRIPTION:For Juneteenth this year\, UniteBoston is teaming up with the New Democracy Coalition and other local partners including The Table for a Christian celebration of liberation on City Hall Plaza. \nThe holiday has a historic meaning within the African American community as way of expressing joy and gratitude about “liberation\, emancipation and justice.” The original Juneteenth celebrations began at Black churches in Texas. The God that Blacks served—who had delivered them from slavery—was and is the God of Liberation. \nOn Monday\, June 20\, 2022\, we will begin what we hope is a tradition: Boston-area Christians coming together to celebrate liberation through the historical prism of Juneteenth. \nElements of the event include: \n• DJ with Gospel and sacred and Soul Music \n• Dancers \n• Drummers \n• Speakers \nChurches and non-profit organizations are invited to bring and set up your own table to share about the work you’re doing in the city\, especially efforts to bring about racial justice and liberation. \nPlease invite your churches and community organizations to join us as we reflect on lighting Boston City Hall in Black Liberation Colors! \nHelp us Spread the Word through the Facebook Event.

SUMMARY:Uncomfortable Conversations: Let's talk about gun violence
DESCRIPTION:“We are in a state of emergency in America. Gun violence occupies the headlines of every news outlet. It is such a polarizing subject\, with pro-gun advocates placed against those who chose gun control. No matter on what side you find yourself\, we have to agree we must do something to prevent gun violence in our country. The church especially!”\n– Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr.\n\n\n\n\n– Did you know that in 2020\, gun violence resulted in more than 45\,000 deaths in the US?\n– Did you know that every day 321 people are shot in the US?\n– Did you know there are 120.5 guns for every 100 people in the US?\n– Did you know Americans are 25x more likely to be killed in a gun homicide than people in other high-income countries?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is our role as Christians in a country with this culture? How can we seek the flourishing of our neighbors in light of these realties? Our panel of experts and activists will help us understand this important issue and challenge us with ways we can engage to make a difference. \n\n\n(Sources: Brady United\, Bloomberg\, Gifford’s Law Center to Reduce Gun Violence\, and AVAIL The Journal)
