SUMMARY:Share Your Voice: Faith & Mental Health Survey
DESCRIPTION:We are two undergraduate researchers studying the relationship between faith and mental health in Black Christian churches across Greater Boston. We’re inviting congregants and pastoral leaders (18+\, identifying as Black\, attending a Christian church with predominantly Black leadership) to complete a brief\, anonymous 10–15 minute online survey. Your voice can help us better understand how faith communities support mental health and where additional resources might help. All responses are confidential and non-identifiable. \nLink to Survey: https://neu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1yTT0sAns2Qunjw

DESCRIPTION:Join our friends at common cathedral as they celebrate 30 years of love\, faith\, and community in Boston! \nSince 1996\, Common Cathedral has walked alongside Boston’s unhoused and housing-insecure neighbors through a ministry rooted in mutuality\, trust\, spiritual presence\, and faithful relationship. This milestone is both a celebration of three decades of ministry and an investment in the years ahead: funds raised through the anniversary celebration will be dedicated to sustaining common cathedral’s street ministry. \nCome celebrate 30 years of faithful presence\, loving community\, and ministry on the streets of Boston—and help strengthen this important work for the future. \nWednesday\, September 16 | 4–7 PMEmmanuel Church | 15 Newbury Street\, Boston \nLearn more\, RSVP\, or support HERE

SUMMARY:What Every Christian Leaders Should Know about Christian Nationalism before the Election
DESCRIPTION:What Every Christian Leaders Should Know about Christian Nationalism before the Election: A Presentation and Discussion with the Western States Center and Massachusetts Council of Churches.\n\nOver the past few election cycles\, Christian nationalism has become a powerful force\, shaping discourse in American political life across school boards\, college campuses\, legislative races and more. Groups like Turning Point USA\, Proud Boys\, NSC-131\, among others\, have gained power and influence in local communities\, including churches\, in both explicit and subtle ways. As of this year\, nearly 1/3 of Americans identify as Christian Nationalists.\n\nHow can Christian leaders identify these various ideologies\, tactics\, and recruitment strategies in our communities? How do we respond effectively? As a corrupt ideology in support of authoritarianism\, Christian nationalism is not new in the United States \, but these current forces require us to learn the new ways they are being deployed.\n\nJoin the experts at the Western States Center and your hosts the Massachusetts Council of Churches as we learn together and discuss what can be done in our local settings. Our expert presenters will share how the tactics of Christian Nationalists manifested in not only faith organizing\, but in education\, elections\, and general community engagement. For the safety and security of our participants\, this online event will not be recorded\, and registration is required. Please join us as we strategize to spread Christ’s true message of love and unity for all.\n\nREGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Reparations and Community Repair
DESCRIPTION:WHAT WE PROPOSE HAPPENS NEXT BRJC outlines six immediate steps to move Boston’s reparations process forward \nBOSTON\, MA – As Boston’s reparations process enters an important new phase following the cancellation of a portion of its historical research\, the Boston Reparative Justice Coalition (BRJC)\, through the Reparations Now! Campaign for Boston\, is releasing a six-step community proposal focused on completing unfinished work\, strengthening descendant participation\, and providing residents with a clearer path from historical research to recommendations and implementation. \nOn September 2\, community activist and American Freedman Aja Jackson wrote in the Bay State Banner that Boston must stop studying reparations and start delivering them. Since then\, the urgency has increased: the Tufts-led portion of the historical research was cancelled\, the full $335\,000 contract amount was returned to the City\, and the separate Northeastern research covering 1940-2020 is complete and under review. \nWith several community proposals and timelines now circulating\, BRJC believes residents should have a clear understanding of what is already underway\, what remains incomplete\, and what additional steps could help move the existing work toward completion. \n“The City must document the facts\, and the community must document what those facts did to our families\,” said Jackson. “The goal is not to replace professional research with testimony. It is to make sure descendant evidence can help identify records\, add context\, reveal gaps\, and show the generational impact of documented public actions.” \nWHAT WE PROPOSE HAPPENS NEXT \n\nComplete the missing historical research. Finish the factual record from the 1600s-1940 with rigorous documentation of policies\, institutions\, properties\, displacement\, economic losses\, government actions\, and other identifiable harms wherever records allow.\nRelease the completed 1940-2020 research for public review. Residents should be able to read the findings\, understand the evidence\, ask questions\, and identify gaps or areas requiring further examination.\nOpen a structured descendant testimony and evidence period. American Freedmen and descendants of people enslaved in the United States should have a clear\, consent-based way to submit family histories\, addresses\, property records\, photographs\, deeds\, oral histories\, business records\, employment histories\, and other evidence.\nConnect community testimony to professional research. Family testimony should help researchers identify missing records\, corroborate documented harms\, provide context\, and reveal impacts that may not appear in government files.\nComplete the economic analysis and connect documented harms to possible remedies. Once the historical and family records are assembled\, Boston can more clearly evaluate the scale and continuing effects of documented harms and organize remedy options for consideration.\nMove to public recommendations and an implementation timetable. The community should know when research ends\, when recommendations will be presented\, how the Mayor will respond\, and what the next steps toward implementation will be.\nCOMPLETE THE FACTUAL RECORD. BUILD THE DESCENDANT RECORD. CONNECT THE EVIDENCE TO THE HARM.\n\nINFORM THE REPAIR. \nCOMMUNITY GATHERING \nREPARATIONS NOW! Community Meeting\, Briefing & Organizing Session – Friday\, September 25\, 2026\, 6:00-7:30 PM\, in front of the Shaw-Dudley Library\, 149 Dudley Street\, Roxbury. Residents are encouraged to bring family names\, Boston addresses\, property information\, photographs\, records\, and the stories they know.

SUMMARY:Faith Formation Under Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Truth is one of the casualties of authoritarianism\, as fascist leaders rewrite the past\, redefine words\, disparage experts\, and wield alternative facts in order to hold power in the present and future. Jesus calls us to truth-telling and truth-living. We explore the political relationships among elites:  corporate\, political\, religious. We spotlight elite church leaders’ relationship with elite political leaders throughout U.S. history. We especially look at how Christian leaders have promoted hierarchy and innocence to defend structures of power. Then\, like Ephesians and Colossians\, we call for truth-living — starting with Jesus’ vision for husband and wife\, and his larger vision for men and women in the church. This is essential for accountability and healthier relationships in the body of Christ.

SUMMARY:Book group - All Riches Come From InJustice
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we rethink how and whether modern economics align with the gospel. In All Riches Come From Injustice\, Stephen D. Morrison examines the radical anti-mammon witness of the Early Church\, exploring Patristic insights on common ownership\, the sin of luxury and why early Christians questioned the salvation of the wealthy. Bridging ancient history with today’s crisis of unprecedented global inequality\, Morrison argues that resisting wealth accumulation and capitalism is an essential part of following Jesus\, rather than a secondary concern. Join us as we explore this history and what it means for us as we seek to follow Jesus today. \nREGISTER HERE!

SUMMARY:Dean's Forum: When Weakness Wins - Reading 2 Corinthians for a Church Chasing Power
DESCRIPTION:2 Corinthians has been called the sleeping giant of Paul’s theology. At its heart lies a paradox that both comforts and unsettles: “My grace is sufficient for you\,” the risen Jesus tells Paul\, “for my power is perfected in weakness.” Few churches\, ancient or modern\, know what to do with that claim. In celebration of B. G. White’s new book\, Pain and Paradox in 2 Corinthians: The Transformative Function of Strength in Weakness (IVP Academic\, 2026)\, this lecture explores how to interpret one of Paul’s richest letters and why its vision of Christ’s upside-down power might be exactly what the church today needs to hear. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. No RSVP required for those joining online. \nRegistration is only required for those planning to attend in person at Gordon-Conwell—Hamilton. Lunch will be provided for those attending in person. \nRegister by Wednesday\, October 28 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. It will be streamed live through Facebook and at www.gcts.edu/live. \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nDr. B.G. White is a faculty member in New Testament at Boston College. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Divinity School and has taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Reformed Theological Seminary. He is the author of Pain and Paradox in 2 Corinthians: The Transformative Function of Strength in Weakness (IVP Academic\, 2026 / Mohr Siebeck\, 2021) and has published peer-reviewed articles in a variety of journals\, including Journal for the Study of the New Testament and Journal of Theological Studies. He has been a guest editor at the Journal of Theological Interpretation and his commentary on issues at the intersection of faith and culture has appeared in major outlets including Christianity Today and The Boston Globe. He has previously served in pastoral ministry and is a Senior Fellow of The Center for Pastor Theologians. \nDr. Patricia Batten is assistant professor of preaching and director of chapel at Gordon-Conwell. She pastored a small church in Kennebunkport\, Maine after receiving her MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She later pursued her passion for teaching after earning her DMin in preaching. Pat finds great pleasure in teaching soon-to-be pastors how to preach expository sermons\, and is delighted to be involved in academia and in ministry. She’s convinced that her preaching makes her teaching more effective and her teaching makes her a better preacher. She is co-editor of Models for Biblical Preaching: Expository Sermons from the Old Testament (Baker Academic\, 2014) and author of Parenting by Faith: What Jesus Said to Parents (Hendrickson Publishing Group\, 2019). \nDr. Sean McDonough is the Mary French Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament. He came to Gordon-Conwell in 2000 from Pacific Theological College in Suva\, Fiji\, where he had served as the Chair of the Biblical Studies Department and as a lecturer in New Testament. His research interests include creation/cosmology in the Bible and the Ancient Near East\, Hellenistic Judaism\, Greek philosophy and religion\, and the Book of Revelation. Dr. McDonough is the author of Truth’s Consuming Ecstasy: Literary and Philosophical Investigations of the Apocalypse of John (Baylor University Press\, 2025). He is a Sunday School teacher and occasional preacher at First Congregational Church in Hamilton.
