SUMMARY:What is the Context? Athanasius’s Biblical Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:All seminary students and pastors are familiar with the dreaded phrase “out of context.” We all know that we should interpret each biblical passage in light of its historical and literary context\, and a great deal of what we learn in seminary is how to do exactly that. But when we compare our own biblical interpretation with that of the early church\, we find that that theirs seems puzzling and maybe even disturbing. Are the church fathers allegorizing the text inappropriately? Are they taking most passages out of context? \nIn this Dean’s Forum\, we’ll examine one of the most important writings from the early church to try to gain insight on this question. Athanasius is one of the most celebrated early Christian writers\, and he writes against the most famous heretic of all time\, Arius. Furthermore\, Athanasius’s main point is that Arius is interpreting all his favorite biblical passages wrong. What is the interpretive principle that enables Athanasius to be so confident? And what can we learn from his interpretation today? \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person. NO RSVP NEEDED IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH ONLINE. SUMMARY:Boston Sankofa Storytelling Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The Boston Sankofa Journey is working to cultivate a common memory and nurture the spiritual vitality that has sustained the Black freedom movement—past and present—rooted in the liberating heart of the gospel. \nThis year\, our team has been working to record the stories of twelve Black Christian leaders whose faith in Jesus has shaped their own faith journeys and fueled the work of racial justice and reconciliation in our beloved city.  \n \n\nThis gathering will bring these testimonies to life through a powerful evening of film premier\, spoken word\, art\, and communal reflection. This gathering is co-hosted by Twelfth Baptist Church\, which is known as a “Fugitive Slave Church” for its central role in the abolitionist movement and as a key stop on the Underground Railroad.   \n\nJoin us on Thursday\, March 26 at Twelfth Baptist Church as we honor and learn from the testimonies of:\n\n\n– Rev. June Cooper\n– Rev. Dr. Willie Bodrick and Twelfth Baptist Church\n– Rev. Valerie Copeland\n– Rev. Dr. David Wright and Tenpoint BMA\n– Bishop Larry Ward and Rev. Dr. Virginia Ward\n– Rev. Dr. Ray Hammond and Rev. Dr. Gloria White-Hammond and Bethel AME Church Boston\n– Mrs. Karen Haywood and The Historic Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton\n– Dr. Geoffrey Hicks Sr.\n\n\nVideo testimonies from the above leaders will be interspersed with live elements of spoken word poetry with Rose Piercy\, Storyteller Sister Alma Wright\, Storyteller Rev. Charmayne Cook\, a song by Minister Isaiah Briggs and Jaronzie Harris\, and Storyteller Deacon Robin Nobles\, with Dzidzor Azalgo as the event host.\n\n\n\n\n*Note that only some of the storytellers will be present at the showcase itself.
