SUMMARY:Solving The World's Greatest Problems
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, May 8 for an 8:30-12:30 dive into Solving the World’s Greatest Problems.  We’re looking to gather 40-50 Christian leaders from across the Boston area to watch a 2 ½ hour videocast of a recent well-regarded event on this topic that included several known Christian leaders (for example\, Tim Tebow).   We’ll then dive into table discussions about what we can do together to actually solve some of the biggest problems that New England faces.  Ideally we’ll come out of this with a rough framework for an action plan with some next steps.  We’ll be meeting at Grace Chapel in Lexington.  Cost is $39\, lunch is included. \nFor more info and to register\, click here

SUMMARY:Cherish: From Individualism to Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Over time\, many marriages drift into something more like a shared life than a shared heart – two people managing schedules\, responsibilities\, and routines\, but slowly becoming more independent than connected. The spark fades\, conversations get practical\, and intimacy – both emotional and physical – can feel distant or out of reach. \nYou’re invited to a morning with bestselling author and marriage teacher Gary Thomas as he invites couples into a different vision of marriage – one marked by deeper connection\, renewed intimacy\, and a shared pursuit of God. Drawing from his books Cherish\, Sacred Marriage\, and Sacred Pathways\, Gary will offer practical\, faith-rooted insights to help you move from simply coexisting to truly knowing and delighting in one another.

Our attendees will benefit from unique opportunities to network and engage with an untapped network of Christian professionals and entrepreneurs. SUMMARY:Singing Through Struggle: Building Community in Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:Music is often called “the universal language” but digging deeper\, we can see how music helps us communicate values\, deeply felt needs\, complex feelings\, and core identities. At church\, when we sing\, sing a certain way\, fund and defund singing\, or argue about singing\, we’re conveying something about who we are or want to be. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Carolynne Hitter Brown will share her research on ways the Black Church has historically relied on music to navigate challenging waters and changing courses\, resist racist forces without and power structures within\, and formulate an authentic and Christ-centered community identity. Considering how cultural polarities\, diverse social issues\, and global struggles effect congregations today\, Dr. Hitter Brown will suggest possible ways music in worship can heal and build Christian community. \nDr. Nicholas Rowe\, Kenneth and Jean Hansen Associate Professor of Leadership\, and Dr. Wes Vander Lugt\, Adjunct Professor of Theology and Acting Director of the Leighton Ford Initiative in Theology\, the Arts\, and Gospel Witness\, will give the response. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person. NO RSVP NEEDED IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH ONLINE. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Boston Sankofa Storytelling Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The Boston Sankofa Journey is working to cultivate a common memory and nurture the spiritual vitality that has sustained the Black freedom movement—past and present—rooted in the liberating heart of the gospel. \nThis year\, our team has been working to record the stories of twelve Black Christian leaders whose faith in Jesus has shaped their own faith journeys and fueled the work of racial justice and reconciliation in our beloved city.  \n \n\nThis gathering will bring these testimonies to life through a powerful evening of film premier\, spoken word\, art\, and communal reflection. SUMMARY:What is the Context? Athanasius’s Biblical Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:All seminary students and pastors are familiar with the dreaded phrase “out of context.” We all know that we should interpret each biblical passage in light of its historical and literary context\, and a great deal of what we learn in seminary is how to do exactly that. But when we compare our own biblical interpretation with that of the early church\, we find that that theirs seems puzzling and maybe even disturbing. Are the church fathers allegorizing the text inappropriately? Are they taking most passages out of context? \nIn this Dean’s Forum\, we’ll examine one of the most important writings from the early church to try to gain insight on this question. Athanasius is one of the most celebrated early Christian writers\, and he writes against the most famous heretic of all time\, Arius. Furthermore\, Athanasius’s main point is that Arius is interpreting all his favorite biblical passages wrong. What is the interpretive principle that enables Athanasius to be so confident? And what can we learn from his interpretation today? \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person. NO RSVP NEEDED IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH ONLINE. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person.

SUMMARY:Dean’s Forum: Exodus: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Exodus is the seminal moment in Israel’s history as a nation. This signal act of God’s saving power liberated Israel from oppression in Egypt\, enabling the Israelites to serve God freely\, even as he dwelt in their midst on their journey to the promised land. Recalling their deliverance from Egypt\, the Israelites celebrated the Passover each year. The story did not end with the inauguration of the New Covenant by Jesus. The Exodus instead became the template for God’s saving act in Christ: baptism represents the liberation from the kingdom of sin and death\, but the Christian life remains a perilous journey through the wilderness of the world until we reach the Promised Land of the New Jerusalem. In this Forum\, we will explore the roots of the Exodus in the deep history of Israel\, and see its final flourishing in the Exodus journey of the Apocalypse. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person. NO RSVP NEEDED IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH ONLINE. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person. \nRegistration by February 4 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. It will be streamed live through Facebook and at www.gcts.edu/live. \nMany of our events are recorded (with speakers permission) and photographs may be taken for publicity purposes and promotion on social media. SUMMARY:Forgiveness: An Alternative Account\, with the Rev. Matthew Potts
DESCRIPTION:‘Forgiveness: An Alternative Account’ – with Guest Speaker The Rev. Matthew Ichihashi Potts. January 21st 6-8pm \nDuring the week of Christian Unity\, we are delighted that the Rev. Dr. Matthew Ichihashi Potts will be joining us at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul\, to speak on the subject of ‘Forgiveness: An Alternative Account’. The ‘blurb’ from his book of the same name tells us: \nMatthew Ichihashi Potts explores the complex moral terrain of forgiveness\, which he claims has too often served as a salve to the conscience of power rather than as an instrument of healing or justice. Though forgiveness is often linked with reconciliation or the abatement of anger\, Potts resists these associations\, asserting instead that forgiveness is simply the refusal of retaliatory violence through practices of penitence and grief. It is an act of mourning irrevocable wrong\, of refusing the false promises of violent redemption\, and of living in and with the losses we cannot recover.  \nJoin us at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138 Tremont St\, Boston). We’ll have refreshments from 6pm; the talk will begin at 6.30pm\, and will include time for questions. The event is free and all are welcome; please help us to plan by signing up HERE.

SUMMARY:Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an international initiative where Christians worldwide are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Locally\, UniteBoston coordinates evening collaborative gatherings of fellowship\, prayer and worship from January 18-25 annually. \n\n\n\nThis Year’s Theme: Drawing from the resilience and liturgical richness of the Christians of Armenia—Oriental Orthodox\, Catholic\, and Evangelical—this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity invites us to reflect on Ephesians 4:4: “There is one body and one Spirit\, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.” As the first nation to officially embrace Christianity in 301 CE\, Armenia offers a profound witness to unity that has survived centuries of persecution and displacement. The materials for 2026 highlight that our shared identity is rooted in a ancient covenant\, symbolized by the safe arrival of Noah’s Ark on Mount Ararat and the promise of the rainbow. By focusing on our common vocation and the “one hope” of salvation\, we are challenged to move beyond historical divisions toward a conversion of heart\, practicing a unity that embraces diversity while remaining steadfast in the love and mission of Christ. \n\n\n\nMark Your Calendars – You are invited to mark your calendars and plan to attend the evening gatherings! In this time of Epiphany\, we encourage you to receive the manifestation of Jesus Christ through those of different denominations\, races and cultures. Let’s make the most of these opportunities in order to truly be the family of God and serve as the body of Christ in the world. Let’s also pray with our feet – consider how our beliefs can come together in common action and witness. \n\n\n\nSpread the Word – We also appreciate help spreading the word to people in your congregation\, family\, friends\, and neighbors. A personal invitation goes a long way. \n\n\n\nUB Board Devotionals – This year for the Week of Prayer\, the UniteBoston Board and Staff will be sharing video devotional and prayers\, which will be shared on our social media. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram! \n\n\n\nCalling to mind our common commitment to ‘love thy neighbor\,’ may the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, January 18-25\, 2025 be full of moments of conversion of heart through our encounters\, so that “all may be one.” \n\n\n\n\n\nResources for Your Week of Prayer Experience\n\n\n\nLitany for Christian Unity \n\n\n\nChristian Unity Daily Prayer Guide – Created by the Greymoor Institute or The Initiative \n\n\n\nIntroduction on the Theme from Greymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Initiative \n\n\n\nAs you are able\, please also share this invitation with other churches and communities in your network so that more communities may gather to pray at this pivotal time in our country and city. \n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule for Gatherings in Boston & New England\n\n\n\n*All events are free and open to all.* \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThurs January 15  – Taizé Prayer with the Sisters of St. Joseph  \n\n\n\n7:00 to 7:45pm at Motherhouse Chapel of the Sisters of St. Joseph\, 637 Cambridge St\, Brighton\, MA 02135 \n\n\n\nTaizé prayer is a simple form of Christian prayer centered on scripture\, silence\, and song based on the daily prayer of the religious community in Taizé\, France. SUMMARY:A More Perfect Communion: Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Feeling conflicted about what it means to be Christian? Until recently\, calling yourself a “Christian” has meant that we share a short list of beliefs about God\, Jesus\, and the Bible with many\, many other Americans. Now the same short list of beliefs no longer has the same unifying effect. What could it mean to be the Church in this moment?\n\nHosted by InterVarsity’s Theological Foundations Department and InterVarsity Greater Boston\, this panel discussion will feature pastor-theologians who will take us beyond that short list into deeper convictions about who we are as human beings\, and what the Church is meant to be and do in our world fractured by race\, politics\, and more. Join us to seek a way for the “communion of saints” to take meaningful shape in our communities and beyond. \nDate: November 21st\, 2025\nTime: 7 pm\nLocation: Central Square Church\n5 Magazine St\, Cambridge\, MA 02139 \nPanelists will include: \n\n\nRev. Dr. Soong-Chan Rah\, Robert B. Munger Professor of Evangelism and Church Renewal at Fuller Theological Seminary and the author of The Next Evangelicalism (IVP Books\, 2009); Many Colors (Moody\, 2010); Prophetic Lament (IVP Books\, 2015); co-author of Forgive Us (Zondervan\, 2014); Return to Justice (Brazos\, 2016); and Unsettling Truths (IVP Books\, 2019). Rev. Dr. Rah is also the founding Senior Pastor of Cambridge Community Fellowship Church\, and has previously served on the boards of World Vision\, Sojourners and the Christian Community Development Association \n\n\nRev. Dr. Joy Jittaun Moore\, MDiv.\, PH.D.\, President and Professor of Homiletics at Northern Seminary and an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. As an “Ecclesial Storyteller”\, she seeks to encourage theologically framed\, biblically attentive\, and socially compelling interpretations of Christian Scripture in order to understand the critical issues influencing community formation in contemporary culture. \n\n\nDr. Marc Cortez is the Dean of the Litfin Divinity School at Wheaton College and a leading expert in theological anthropology\, an area of theology that focuses on what Christians believe about human persons. He has written multiple books on the subject\, including Theological Anthropology: A Guide for the Perplexed (Bloomsbury\, 2010)\, ReSourcing Theological Anthropology (Zondervan\, 2018)\, and Christological Anthropology in Historical Perspective (Zondervan\, 2016). \n\n\nThis discussion will be moderated by Rev. Dr. Jeff Liou\, PhD\, the National Director of Theological Formation for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Jeff has been ministering among college students and young adults since 2001. His scholarly interest and work are at the intersection of race\, identity\, and ministry. \nThis discussion is free and open to the public\, with a special welcome to InterVarsity Alumni! A reception with refreshments and an opportunity to connect more with InterVarsity Greater Boston will follow the discussion. We hope that this event and the discussion that follows will serve as an opportunity to explore how these questions intersect with the college campus and influence the work InterVarsity is doing to disciple the next generation. RSVP is encouraged. SUMMARY:Revelation in Ecumenical Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture series\, Rodney L. Petersen\, (PhD\, Princeton) along with Gerald L. Bray (PhD\, La Sorbonne) have co-edited and published the volume on the highly enigmatic and consequential Book of Revelation under InterVarsity Press. Sixteenth-century Reformers\, much like interpreters today\, show a diversity of opinion on how Revelation is to be understood\, whether through more spiritual and Last Judgment connotations\, or as a snapshot in historical context. Much like the vast social and political upheaval in the time of the Reformation\, we have called upon Rodney and his colleagues to remark upon Revelation in ecumenical perspectives today. Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM) and the Boston Theological Interreligious consortium (BTI)\, two of Rodney’s previous places of directorship\, are helping to put this conversation together with friends—at the Boston University Marsh Chapel on Thursday\, November 20\, 2025\, from 3-5pm—for an afternoon of retrospection and future revelation. (This will also be\, in a way\, an opening for AAR/SBL Boston\, which begins the next day.) Click here to purchase the book \nPROGRAM SUBJECT TO CHANGE \n\nWelcome: Dr. Stephanie Edwards (BTI) and Dean Robert Allan Hill (BU)\nBTI International Mission and Ecumenism reflections on the book: Dr. Meg Guider (BC) and Dr. Todd Johnson (GCTS)\nPractical implications: Rev. Dr. Casely Essamuah and Dr. George Walters-Sleyon\nThank you/closing prayer/last word: Rev. Dr. Rodney Petersen and Thomas W. Porter\, Jr.\, Esq.
