SUMMARY:The 55th Season of Black Nativity
DESCRIPTION:Black Nativity welcomes ALL people\, far and wide\, into our circle of light. This is the Nativity story told through the lens of the African American experience\, but its message belongs to everyone who has ever needed hope\, ever sought home\, ever dreamed of a world where love wins. For 55 years\, we have been a gathering place where differences dissolve and humanity unites under the universal language of joy\, resilience\, and peace. \nBlack Nativity tells the story of the birth of the Christ Child from the point of view of Black Americans in the early twentieth century. Amid the hilly streets of Bethlehem\, a hotel with butlers and maids is set and filled with gospel music and gossipy chatter. In it the Holy Family find themselves surrounded by ordinary folk\nwho welcome their message and sing it with joy. Though based on New Testament gospels\, we offer the story as a testament to the joy of new births and to the hope that fills persons of “good will” from all traditions. Our message is one of transformation and spiritual uplift. \nInspired by Langston Hughes’ 1963 original production\, Boston’s Black Nativity retains the artistic direction of NCAAA Founder Elma Lewis; Director of Drama\, Vernon Blackman; Choreographer\, George Howard; and legendary Nigerian master percussionist\, Michael Babatunde Olatunji. The show’s music is set to the musical arrangements and adaptations of NCAAA Founding Music Director\, John Andrew Ross. \nOur 55th Anniversary Season features:\n75+ Voices Rising as One – Children and adults unite in glorious gospel harmonies that will move your spirit and stir your soul.\nThe Pulse of African Drums – Experience the dramatic pas de deux birth scene that happens live before your eyes\, propelled by the ancient rhythms that connect us all.\nA Living Legacy – Witness the continuation of artistic mastery passed down through generations\, from Elma Lewis to today’s visionary artists.\nFresh Energy\, Timeless Message – Gospel\, jazz\, and even hints of Hip-Hop breathe new life into this eternal story of hope.\n“Black Nativity is Boston’s Black community’s holiday card to the world” – a gift of transformation and spiritual uplift that has touched hundreds of thousands of lives across five and a half decades. \nDecember 5–21\, 2025\nThursdays: 7:30 pm\nFridays: 8:00 pm\nSaturdays: 2:30 & 7:30 pm\nSundays: 3:30 pm \n\nASL Interpreted Performances\nFriday\, December 5th — 8:00 PM\nSaturday\, December 13th — 2:30 PM\nSunday\, December 21st — 3:00 PM \n\nRobert J. SUMMARY:Revelation in Ecumenical Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture series\, Rodney L. Petersen\, (PhD\, Princeton) along with Gerald L. Bray (PhD\, La Sorbonne) have co-edited and published the volume on the highly enigmatic and consequential Book of Revelation under InterVarsity Press. Sixteenth-century Reformers\, much like interpreters today\, show a diversity of opinion on how Revelation is to be understood\, whether through more spiritual and Last Judgment connotations\, or as a snapshot in historical context. Much like the vast social and political upheaval in the time of the Reformation\, we have called upon Rodney and his colleagues to remark upon Revelation in ecumenical perspectives today. Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM) and the Boston Theological Interreligious consortium (BTI)\, two of Rodney’s previous places of directorship\, are helping to put this conversation together with friends—at the Boston University Marsh Chapel on Thursday\, November 20\, 2025\, from 3-5pm—for an afternoon of retrospection and future revelation. (This will also be\, in a way\, an opening for AAR/SBL Boston\, which begins the next day.) Click here to purchase the book \nPROGRAM SUBJECT TO CHANGE \n\nWelcome: Dr. Stephanie Edwards (BTI) and Dean Robert Allan Hill (BU)\nBTI International Mission and Ecumenism reflections on the book: Dr. Meg Guider (BC) and Dr. Todd Johnson (GCTS)\nPractical implications: Rev. Dr. Casely Essamuah and Dr. George Walters-Sleyon\nThank you/closing prayer/last word: Rev. Dr. Rodney Petersen and Thomas W. Porter\, Jr.\, Esq.

SUMMARY:United Gospel Experience Tour
DESCRIPTION:Our finale concert for the 2025-2026 United Gospel Experience Tour will be on Saturday April 18 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at Morningstar Baptist Church\, 1257 Blue Hill Ave\, Mattapan\, MA 02126. \nCentered on the theme “Come together\, stay together\, worship together” (Mt. 18:20)\, the tour centers on Jesus’ promise that “where two or three gather in my name\, there am I with them.” In these challenging times\, our prayer is that\, through this united worship\, God’s Spirit will move mightily to bring healing\, reconciliation\, and new life. We’ve discovered that when students from across New England join their voices in one choir\, gospel music rises as a powerful proclamation of hope and freedom. \nPlease help us spread the word by spreading the word to local pastors and congregations through our invite letter!  \nClick here to read the story behind this year’s tour and how you can be part of it. And don’t miss this documentary of highlights and testimonies from last year’s gospel experience tour! \n  \n

SUMMARY:We Protect Each Other: Immigrants in MA with “TPS” Fight Back Against Losing Status
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that over 1.1 million people in the United States (including more than 27\,000 in MA) are at risk of living their existing legal immigration status? The Trump Administration is doing everything they can to end “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS) for immigrants from 17 countries in which the conditions are unsafe for their return. Many of them have been in our communities for more than 15 or 20 years\, owning property\, starting small businesses\, and raising citizen children. Without a pathway to Permanent Residency\, TPS-holders from countries like Haiti\, Venezuela\, Nepal\, Honduras\, El Salvador\, and Afghanistan will be forced into an impossible choice: depart the U.S. by a given end date within the next year\, or lose their work permits and legal status and be at risk of detention and deportation at any time. \nCome hear from immigrant leaders in the MA TPS Committee\, who will share with us about their fight\, their wins in the courts so far\, and what they need from the greater faith community in MA to work alongside them for these protections. While in the long run a pathway to Legal Permanent Residency is needed for TPS-Holders\, right now we need to fight with them to be able to simply stay in their homes and prevent separation from citizen children. \nWe’ll also share about their newly released documentary and an opportunity to host showings in your own congregation with MA TPS Committee speakers available for post-viewing conversations. \nHosted by: The MA TPS Committee\, Episcopal City Mission\, UU Mass Action\, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism\, UniteBoston\, and Merrimack Valley Project\, and Essex County Community Organization \nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/fmlROfiVSga2aM62R0b-bw

This study is a chance to move beyond feeling overwhelmed by the homelessness crisis and explore a faith-based approach to engaging with it. \nThe book\, written by minister and advocate Kevin Nye\, demystifies complex issues like affordable housing\, addiction\, and mental illness\, while re-envisioning our theological response. It offers a powerful message: Jesus\, from the margins\, has something to teach us all about grace that could change the landscape of homelessness and our response to it. \nWe’ll meet every other Tuesday 7:30 -9 via Zoom starting 9/23. Register here.

SUMMARY:Prayers for Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Dear Massachusetts Residents of All Faiths: \nWe are writing to you with an invitation to pray with your feet and march with us from Lexington to Boston this Labor Day – Monday\, September 1st\, 9:00-5:00 – to sound the alarm for American democracy and to demand a more just and humane democracy that honors our shared sacred values. \nOn Friday\, May 30th\, hundreds of us marched this same route from Lexington to Boston\, reversing Paul Revere’s ride for liberty 250 years ago to sound the alarm for democracy\, as the actions of our current presidential administration regularly violate our shared sacred values and our constitutional rights. We stopped in Lexington\, Arlington\, Cambridge\, and Boston to pray to God for the merciful and just rule of law from our federal administration\, as well as the protection and preservation of our sacred values and democratic principles. We also brought a letter signed by over 300 Massachusetts clergy\, addressed to members of our Congressional Delegation. \nTo join any portion of the march and prayers on September 1st\, please register here. \nIf you have questions or would like more information\, our leadership team will host question and response sessions for clergy and other religious leaders over zoom on Thursday\, August 14th\, from 6:00-6:45 p.m. and on Tuesday\, August 19th from 8:30-9:15 a.m. \nA printable flyer and handout to share with friends\, family\, and congregations is available here. \nJoin us on September 1st in our call to religious leaders around the country\, and all our fellow Americans: calling for our President to obey the law and to respect the decisions of our courts and the rights of all American residents. \nIn our faith traditions and our American tradition\, the President is not a dictator or tyrant. Instead\, “the Law is King\, and no person is above the law.” (Thomas Paine\, Common Sense) \nIn Faith\, Hope\, and Power\, \nThe Prayer for Freedom Organizing Team \n\nFrequently Asked Questions (FAQ) \nWhat does the schedule look like on Monday\, September 1st? \n9:00 a.m. Hancock Church – parking\, gathering\, greeting \n9:15 a.m. Opening prayer on Lexington Battle Green \n9:45 a.m. Walk from Lexington to Arlington (~5.3 miles) \n12:00 p.m. Prayer in Arlington Center – The lawn at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Arlington \n12:30  Walk to Cambridge Commons (~3.5 Miles) \n2:30 Prayer in Cambridge Center – Cambridge Commons \n3:00 Walk to Boston Commons – 3.1 to 3.2 miles \n5:00 Boston Prayer and Rally at the Common – Embrace Statue or Common Bandstand \n  \nWho can participate in the march? For what parts? \nPeople of all faiths are invited to participate in any segment. We will walk relatively quickly between stops\, in order to make it to each of our prayer gatherings on time. (See our schedule above.) For our friends who are disabled\, tired\, busy\, etc.\, we welcome participation at any one of the prayer stops in Lexington\, Arlington\, Cambridge\, or especially at our conclusion in Boston in lieu of marching. \n  \nCan I use my clothing\, signage\, and speech to protest other offenses at this event?  \nWhile we respect the conscience\, speech\, and liberty of all our clergy and other participants\, at this event we are focused on the preservation of our shared sacred values and democratic\, constitutional governance. In our prayers and signage\, we ask that participants not mention any other issues\, however important they are to one’s conscience or community. \n  \nWhat should I bring? What should I wear? \nClergy are encouraged to wear any clothing identifying their tradition and/or role. We will have bathroom stops in Arlington and Cambridge. We recommend all participants bring a refillable water bottle\, some snacks in your pocket\, sunscreen and hat\, and comfortable walking shoes! \nFor more information and to register\, go to Prayersforliberty.org
