SUMMARY:Unity—or Disunity—in the Church: How Can We Be One?
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sundays from 1/7/2018 to 1/28/2018 from 11:00am to 12:00pm \nLocation: Lexington – Adult Learning Center\, Room 205 – 2 MILITIA DRIVE\, LEXINGTON\, MA US 02421 \n“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message\, that all of them may be one\,Father\, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:20-21) \n\nAs Jesus gathered with his disciples for the last time around the table before going to the cross\, his prayer was that we\, his followers\, would be perfected in unity—so that the world would know the Father’s love. 500 years after the Protestant Reformation\, one of numerous splits in the Church\, do we feel challenged to recall Christ’s prayer and to seek out paths to the hope of unity—for the love of the world? Join us as a team of diverse brothers and sisters in Christ leads an exploration through this frontier of opportunity to strengthen our witness to our neighbors of God’s love in these divisive times. \nPhoto attribution: Scott Lenger\, https://www.flickr.com/photos/scottlenger/3577772296. This quilt hangs in the entryway of the National Council of Churches USA office in NYC. \n  \nWEEK 1: The Vine and the Branches: Growth of the Church in the Context of Culture\nWith Tim Castner\, Grace Chapel Adult Discipleship Team \nIn this opening class\, we will explore the branching out of the Christian faith and growth of the Church as expressed across the variety of cultures in which it first took root. We will consider historical aspects of the cultures that embraced the early Church\, and the interplay between culture and Church in various regions. \n\n  \n\nWEEK 2: Church History and Denominations 101\nWith Kelly Steinhaus\, Executive Director/Team Leader\, Unite Boston \nThis class will guide us through an overview of the development of denominations out of the early Church. We will be challenged to reflect on the phenomenon of denominationalism with 21st-century eyes.  We will consider a model for relating positively across denominations. \n  \nWEEK 3: Scriptural Teaching on Christian Unity\nWith Scott Brill\, Institute for Christian Unity\, and Campus Minister\, Assumption College \nWhat does the Bible say about Christian unity? What have the denominations declared? In this class we will explore key scriptural references to unity among Christ-followers in the Church. We will look at ways that sacrament and/or doctrine have differentiated or converged over the lifespan of the Church. \n  \nWEEK 4: Panel Discussion – Unity in the Church\, 500 Years Post-Reformation\nModerator: Valerie Pietry\, member\, Grace Chapel and St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish\nPanelists:  Kelly Steinhaus\, Unite Boston; Scott Brill\, Institute for Christian Unity; Fr. Tom Ryan\, Paulist Ecumenical Relations; Lisa Oelerich\, Alpha New England; Bill Henson\, Lead Them Home \nAt Pentecost\, a great variety of people in Jerusalem\, from all the nations\, heard the rushing wind herald the arrival of the Holy Spirit. As they drew near\, they heard the spoken Word of the Apostles each in their own language. Peter reminds us of God’s promise to pour forth his Spirit on all mankind. What can this event say to us about the variety of expressions of Christ’s message of love among the denominations\, his Body\, today? In this class we will hear from a panel of Christians called from the context of their own denominations and experience to work towards unity in the greater Church.

SUMMARY:Share the Journey: Join in Prayer during NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse \nWednesday\, January 10\, 2018 \n to “Share the Journey” and join in prayer for \nNational Migration Week\nThere will be prayer services at \n12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. \n637 Cambridge St.\, Brighton\, MA 02135 \nAll are welcome \n  \nOn September 27\, 2017\, Pope Francis launched the 2-year “Share the Journey” campaign\, with migrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers. He is asking us to hear their stories\, literally\, share their journeys and see them as our brothers and sisters.  Throughout this 2-year “journey”\, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston Immigration Committee is planning events and disseminating material to help sisters\, associates\, partners in mission\, and all “dear neighbors” to focus in prayer and in action on behalf of the 65 million refugees and migrants seeking shelter\, safety\, and eventually  a “home”. \nFor nearly a half-century\, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week\, which is an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants\, including immigrants\, refugees\, children\, and victims and survivors of human trafficking. \n“Many Journeys\, One Family\,” the theme for National Migration Week\,  draws attention to the fact that each of our families has a migration story\, some recent and others in the distant past. Regardless of where we are and where we came from\, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. \nLearn more at https://www.sharejourney.org/

SUMMARY:Greater Boston House of Prayer at The Wall
DESCRIPTION:If my people\, who are called by my name\, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways\, then I will hear from heaven\, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in  this place.” -2 Chronicles 7:14-15 NIV \nDear Brothers and Sisters\, \nWe are living in a time of great distress\, fear and disillusionment within the Church\, the nation and world.  We have an option to waver in disbelief or to put God’s word to the test for our generation.  In Ezekiel 22:30\, God told the prophet “I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it\, but I found no one.”  Our generation will stand and build up the wall before God on behalf of our communities and nation! \nWe will not waver in between two opinions\, we declare that in our life time this generation will encounter a living and life changing\, Yehsua!! \nOur response to this call to stand and build up the wall is to launch a House of Prayer in Greater Boston that will serve as steadfast altar before God.  Join us EVERY Friday\, starting January 19th at 7pm at 455 Blue Hill Avenue\, Dorchester\, MA 02121 (Beulah Pilgrim Holiness Church) for our House of Prayer at The Wall gathering!  It will be a time of prophetic worship\, intercession\, exhortation and prophetic declaration! \nWill You Stand Watch with Us?

SUMMARY:Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Fellowship Meal - Anchor Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Last January\, during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity\, hundreds of us gathered at Holy Name Church in West Roxbury for an amazing day of fellowship and learning\, and an especially moving prayer service. As Cardinal O’Malley reminded us at that service\, “Today we have seen amazing things.” \nAnd we have continued to see amazing things throughout 2017\, as the Holy Spirit has been at work throughout greater Boston in many contexts bringing Christians together across many of our historic divisions. \nNow we are fast approaching the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. It is our desire to not just repeat an experience this year\, but to take a next step in enriching the relational connections that were made last year. It seems that most appropriate one for this year would be to host a meal together where we can get to know one another better and share more of our stories. \nThe theme for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is from Exodus 15:6 – “Your Right Hand\, O Lord\, Glorious in Power.” It evokes both the justice and the mercy of God’s action toward us. For this shared meal\, it captures both the tension and the warmth of gathering together; there are many historic divisions among us that remain unresolved\, yet it is good to be with one another and to allow room for God’s love and power to bring healing. \nAt the gathering\, we would like to focus on where each of us have seen God’s powerful hand working in our churches and neighborhoods\, in the midst of our divisions. We would like to encourage each person to bring a story or aspect of their faith tradition that they’d like to share with others. At the gathering\, we will sit by neighborhood and share a meal together. We will also hear briefly from a few leaders of the various Christian streams about where they have seen God at work to overcome divisions between us. \nHere are the details: \nJoin us for dinner on Saturday\, January 20th from 5:00 to 7:30pm at Lion of Judah Church\, 20 Reed Street\, Boston. The cost for the dinner will be $10\, and a portion of the event will go to a local justice-minded organization. Please bring $10 cash to the event. \nWe wish there was a venue or a format that was large enough to allow everyone from last year to come and to invite a friend. Unfortunately\, space will be limited this year\, so we encourage you to sign up quickly to reserve your space! Sign up via Eventbrite here. \nPlease consider how God may be inviting you to participate this year\, and please pray for this endeavor – that the love of Christ might overcome all divisions! \nP.S. It is our intention in future years to return to the larger liturgical prayer service format in order to make space for all who would like to come.

SUMMARY:Perspectives on the World Christian Movement Class
DESCRIPTION:Why Perspectives? \nGod has a “world-sized” role for every Christian in His global purpose.Whether people go to distant countries or stay at home is a secondary issue. The primary issue is what most people are hungry to discover: vision to live a life of purpose. Discovering that vision makes this course valuable\, and perhaps crucial\, for any Christian. \nWhat is Perspectives? \nPerspectives is a fifteen week course designed around four vantage points or “perspectives” — Biblical\, Historical\, Cultural and Strategic. Each one highlights different aspects of God’s global purpose. \nThe Biblical and Historical sections reveal why our confidence is based on the historic fact of God’s relentless work from the dawn of history until this day. \nThe Cultural and Strategic sections underscore that we are in the midst of a costly\, but very “do-able” task\, confirming the Biblical and Historical hope. \nTHE CLASS CAN BE TAKEN FOR KEY READING\, CERTIFICATE\, OR CREDIT. \nThe Boston class starts Wednesday\, January 24 from 6:00-9:00 at Park Street Church – Click here for more information. \nThere will also be a class in Lynnfield on Monday nights at Calvary Christian Church beginning Monday January 22 – click here for more information. \nClasses in New England (check website for church locations and to register): \nFairfield\, CT begins on Monday\, January 15 from 6:30-9:30 pm\nAvon\, CT begins on Tuesday\, January 23 from 6:30-9:30 pm\nWarwick\, RI begins on Thursday\, January 18 from 6:30-9:30 pm\nHolden\, MA begins on Sunday\, January 21 at 3:00-6:00 pm\nLynnfield\, MA begins on Monday\, January 22 from 6:30-9:30 pm\nBoston\, MA begins on Wednesday\, January 24 from 6:00-9:00 pm

SUMMARY:The Church as a Reconciling Presence in a World of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Keynote Session\, January 25: The Church as a Reconciling Presence in a World of Conflict: The Role of Religion in International Conflict Transformation \nIs religion a cause of violent conflict or a catalyst for its transformation? Do faith leaders have a role at the international peacebuilding tables? Current international affairs highlight the power of religious ideologies—and their misappropriation—as a catalyst for social action. They have also prompted unprecedented interest in the role of religious leaders and ideologies to transform conflict and violence. \nThe session features Canon Sarah Snyder\, PhD\, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Director of Reconciliation and Bishop Anthony Poggo\, PhD\, Advisor for Anglican Communion Affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury. They will share their experiences of working in conflict zones and reflect on vital lessons for the contemporary world.\n\n\n\nSpace is limited. RSVP is required.
