Call for Papers: The Church as Sanctuary: Reimagining the Future of an Ancient Tradition

October 17 from 8:00 am - October 18 from 5:00 pm

What is the meaning of sanctuary over the next four years? With the removal of the “sensitive locations” policy, the growing resistance towards sanctuary cities, and increased rhetoric on mass deportations, what does it mean to reimagine sanctuary for today? This conference seeks to explore how religious communities are responding to the political and humanitarian crisis facing (im)migrants in our modern world, and the lessons to be learned from this ancient tradition.

This conference is open to graduate students who are interested in contributing to the growing field of Christianity and migration studies. Disciplinary approaches can include Bible, theology, ethics, history, philosophy, missiology, and social scientific approaches to the study of Christianity & migration.

Paper topics can include, but are not limited to:

  • Sanctuary Cities
  • Law & Public Policy
  • Early & Medieval Christianity
  • Christian Nationalism & Immigration
  • Historical & Contemporary Case Studies
  • The Sanctuary & New Sanctuary Movement
